Obama to announce Afghanistan troop decision from West Point next Tuesday

This was either well hidden or completely short notice because I did not hear a single thing about this. Should be an interesting speech. :thumb:

AF, it was announced this a.m...many of you had already left WP by the time it was announced on the news. My cadet hadn't heard until I told him on the way home from Hartsfield.

It was all over the news yesterday by about 2:00pm.

I hope he doesn't escalate the war by sending more troops in. I fear for our military's ability to respond to other, possibly more urgent conflicts

I just heard someone complaining on the radio because the Charlie Brown Christmas special is being pre-empted by this non-announcement announcement.

Personally, I feel President Obama is using the USMA cadets as props, since he doesn't really have any ties to or even like the military. But I'm just saying...

I don't think thats fair. The USMA cadets are going to be directly affected by this decision, and the President wishes to lay his plan out directly to them. He absolutely has ties to the military, he is the commander in chief of the armed forces

Actually, I have heard a large number of people share this opinion including our instructors. We're the nice backdrop. I don't doubt there were other reasons but that was certainly a motive.

Not sure what "non announcement announcement" means. If McCain had won the election and made essentially the same speech - that 30,000 MORE Americans will be fighting in a war - would that make a difference.
I think Americans are just used to being at war. We have forgotten what it is like to be in peacetime.

Of course Obama is using the Cadets as a prop. Anything but a blue screen in the background is a prop. President Bush used them as a prop on June 1, 2002 at the Class of 2002 Commencement addressed when he put forth the Bush Doctrine. Read the book "In a Time of War" if you want to know what happened to that class. He used them again last Dec when he went back to defend his Bush Doctrine. What is good for the goose is good for the gander -
maybe what you mean to say is:
Oh No - Not another President using Cadets as props. This certainly is becoming habit forming.
The question is will Obama go back in Dec of 2012 - on his way out of the Oval Office - to defend his war plan?

An acquaintance I know at USMA said that, especially in person, the president seemed to lack belief in what he was saying. Any comments from current cadets?

No I heard nothing of the kind from my cadet. If you do choose to become a service academy cadet or rotc cadet you will have to learn to edit what you post on public boards especially about your commander in chief.

Wow...just wow!

The whole speech is up on youtube if (like me), you missed the live one.

I thought he sounded pretty sure of himself. I think we should focus more on the content of his speech rather than how he delivered it. I got pretty upset when he decided on increasing troop levels but my disappointment turned to happiness when he revealed his exit plan :thumb:

I said nothing bad about the commander in chief. I watched the speech live and thought he composed himself quite well. I was simply curious as to the perceptions of the cadets. Tone of voice is different live from television. I attribute some of what my friend said to the tiredness of the cadets, having sat in Eisenhower Hall for so long. I did not mean my post to in any way be interpreted as an insult to our president. I am sorry if it came across as such. However, I believe one of the most important aspects of our country is the freedom to discuss and question actions of the government- that does not mean that as I military member I would insult and/or defy them in any way. Please do not take my posed question as such.
