Objee,

Can you make a suggestion on a brand of a watch to get my SWAB. Want to give it to him as a HS graduation present......

Maybe "Line in the Sand" and "Luigi" can also suggest.

Thanks.

PS. Drove thru campus today....flowering trees/bushes in full bloom, clear sky and water for a Sailing competition, and some pizza being delivered to Chase Hall, Crew teams having a picnic, baseball/softball fields groomed. It was really nice! Also, saw the 2012 ring sheild. COOL

watch

For swab summer, and swab summer only......the cadet handbook says..

"Digital, waterproof watch with a durable, dark colored wrist band."

My daughter took cheap timex kids watch that had an elastic watchband in a dark color. It was about $15 at Target. She figured there was a good chance she would lose or break it during swab summer so she didn't want a good one. The elastic band made it easier to get on and off....didn't have to mess with a clasp or anything.

After swab summer, decided to keep it!

Someone on the USMMA thread suggested a St Moritz moementum dive watch..

I found them at nice prices on www.scubatoys.com

(50 bux) good price...

recommendations by plebes and parents..were no metal bands and no plastic.. so webbed bands seem the only option ...

Something like this Timex IronMan, available at Amazon, is perfect..

They (Timex) make many different versions, but as mnolan said, choose a digital one with a plain black plastic/rubber watchband.

The "Flix" feature of this watch is nice when it's dark, you can just "flick" your wrist to light it up (Think of when your swab is at the top on the Royal Yard Arm on Eagle at night, clinging to the rigging 146 feet in the air in high seas, and he suddenly wants to know what time it is - he can simply flick his wrist without removing his white-knuckled death-grip from the lines. )

The 2012 Class Crest is pretty cool, huh?

And yes, the campus is absolutely spectacular in spring.

Good advice from mnolan and Luigi...most cadets don't seem to wear "dress watches" until 2/c (or maybe even 1/c) year, so you can certainly buy him one as a graduation present [my parents actually did this and I'm still wearing it almost 20 years later] but it may not be regularly worn for a few years.

I would agree. Get them something durable BUT inexpensive, Timex is great. I would advise against a Timex with the cloth band because your swab will be sweaty.....all the time. Save your money and get him/her a nice dressy watch (that will look good with a big clunky ring). To tell you the truth, when I was a swab and a cadre, swabs were allowed to have a watch until later in the summer. The exception was the "guidon" who kept time for the platoon. Not sure if this has changed.

So, again, my advice, save your money for a nice watch after the summer, something you could give your swab when they get to the regular school year, and buy a durable, less expensive watch for the summer.

Timex makes the Ironman watches with rubber bands. I've taken mine off maybe twice in 2+ years. It's a great watch and it is indestructible. It has taken such a beating but it still works great. The flix feature is really nice too.

So who carves / makes the crests?

careful swimming with a timex watch though. i've had two 100m water resistant watches get water in them, one over swab summer and one this past spring break.

Is that a giant lemon Spree on the left side?

It feels great when your class finally gets its crest, almost like you finally have an identity.

Try...

The Casio G-Shock series is a good bet. I had a solar-powered one that I still wear, 10 years later. Durable, and falls within regs...
