Hi all. USMA mom here. Curious what guidance other Service Academies are giving their students regarding OCONUS travel over the winter break. Specifically, since upon entering a service academy, one loses SOFA eligibility under parents and currently, places like Germany are only allowing those with SOFA status to legally enter due to COVID, what are your kids being advised to do to gain entry to spend the holidays with family?

This link is a good one to follow to keep up with DOD policies. Each component will have its own, which may be more restrictive, but according to custom, not less restrictive.

At the four Service Academies where cadets and midshipmen are active duty as emancipated adults, they will likely be directed to comply with their Service policy for unofficial travel OCONUS, and also align with current travel bans on U.S. citizens to certain countries. It will indeed be interesting to hear what cadets and midshipmen are being advised, policy-wise, by their chains of command.

USCGA, of course, is not a DOD entity, but I am sure they are consistent.

Diffficult times continue.

USNA has already said no overseas travel over winter break. According to my Mids roomie, and his over sea parents. So they are coming here for break.

With quarantine requirements for flying to CONUS and then back OCONUS, that is a lot of time off for employed parents.

Yes! It is. Originally my Mid let me know that his buddy would come home to our house with him for break. So they do figure stuff out! And one reason his buddy isn’t coming is bc he is on a sports team that requires him to be on the Yard. So there are lots of different scenarios that can/will happen.

Its yet another unfortunate reality of a global pandemic....
