OCP Uniform

Has anyone heard news of what the academy’s plans are for uniforms? The class of 2023 was instructed to bring ABU boots for BCT, but the Air Force will be changing completely to OCP by 2021. So I guess the question is how and when will they change over uniforms at the academy.
 
The plan was to switch the entire wing over to OCPs this summer, but that was far-fetched from the beginning and it won't be happening. As it is now, the firsties received one pair of OCPs to wear after they graduate, and the plan is to switch everybody over at once at a later time (maybe next year or next summer). Personally, I don't see this happening, as there is already a huge shortage in the operational Air Force. I think we would be better off just doing the same thing that USAFA did for the ABU rollout and transitioning each class individually. We'll see.

Heck with that, I wanna know if they will ever actually go back to the "Pinks and Greens" haha!
 
General Silveria told us in a briefing that we (the entire cadet wing) will be switching over to OCPs in April. The class of 2024 will be issued them at in-processing.
 
Supposedly the issue is they have plenty of OCPs for us, they just don't have enough cold-weather gear for everyone so they need to wait until spring when we won't need it as much
 
Here's a question from out in right field.

How is cadet rank indicated on OCPs? Is there any rank, or is the class number on the nametape all there is?

I’d assume it’s the same as everyone else- by the square right in the middle- same place it is on the fleece, and also in the cover (very annoying location by the way- often covered by a lanyard and much more difficult to make out than the lapel rank on ABUs)
 
There were certain days last spring when firsties had the option to wear OCPs, provided they also owned the appropriate coyote brown boots instead of standard sage ones. If I recall correctly, the direction we received was to wear metal rank in the spot where a rank tab would normally be displayed. Berets were worn instead of OCP covers since we had our officer rank sewn on already. (Also 100% agree with USAFA10s about the annoying location...:confused:)

That would be the incoming ARMY uniform...don't think we want to do that.

Hmm... I think I'll come up with a color-appropriate subdued version for the books. They are set in the mid-21st century, after all. Plenty of time for the USAFA to decide what to do...

My DS said they are getting their OCP's now, but cannot wear them until after graduation.
 
Projected timeline for OCPs is June 2020 after graduation. Cadets will wear a patch with their class year where the duty identifier is to be worn (left arm) instead of on the nametag like in the past. Rank will be metal on the square but none on the hat (like ABUs) and so far cadets will be given an allowance to purchase their own boots though that could change at any time.
 
My DS is a C4C at USAFA and got his Tuesday. He also said they would start wearing them later in the year but has heard no definite time line.

We just got issued OCPs, but we won't start wearing them till later, probably next academic year. If you're coming to USAFA, I'd suggest buying some nice boots for the OCPs now, as they are going to get expensive soon.
 
The OCP mandatory wear date isn't for over a year still (April 2021- here is an article about it. However, a large portion of the AF has already switched. I have switched completely - I LOVE OCPs compared to ABUs. They are WAY more comfortable for me (and they fit much better too, after I spent two hours trying on every single size)
