My son has been told he has been accepted into OCS and will enter in the January class.

Will he receive a letter anytime soon officially notifying him of his acceptance and class date?

When will be required to swear in?

Which Service? Often you will be sworn in by your officer recruiter. The military will certainly send reporting and travel instructions.

Great news - OCS/OTS is highly competitive!

Capt MJ, for the Marines.

It sure is competitive, he's been working hard to improve his PFT score.

So being sworn in should happen soon even though his class starts in January?

I don’t know how the Marines do it. Let’s hope someone pops up with an answer.

My son spent a couple summers at beautiful Quantico by the Potomac but that was, mercy time flies, about 10 years ago. I’ll tell you what I remember.

For PLC juniors we drove him down to Quantico from Alexandria and met his OSO at the exchange. The captain and gunny drove DS and other candidates over to Brown Field. The next summer we had moved to our current abode which is a couple miles from the main gate. The wife and I just drove him over and dropped him off like he was going to hang out at a friend’s house. The candidates from out of area flew in and I’m not sure how they got to Quantico or if they had anybody meet them.

I don’t remember a swearing in but he might have done something like that at the OSO’s office. He did have to report with orders of some kind which the captain provided. The swearing and contracting and all that comes at commissioning after PLC or OCC.

That’s what I remember. I can’t ask my son as he is in the field teaching Marines the importance of the relationship between det. cord and 10 seconds or something like that.

It sounds like he is an OCC candidate if starting in January? So he will complete the 10 weeks then commission? If that is the case, he will swear in with his OSO and sign his paperwork for OCS. He will commission at the end of OCS. Your son should be asking his OSO these details, but yes, there will be paperwork. These will end up being in his Officer Qualification Record or whatever it is called now that it is electronic. Eventually official orders will be cut with any travel info needed. Sometimes that won’t come until right before he leaves. His OSO will provide packing lists, etc. There is a Marine OCS website that has a lot of info: https://www.trngcmd.marines.mil/Northeast/Officer-Candidates-School/

How he should go about reporting will be in his orders. Often, not always, when flying in, they have you report to the USO at the airport and then bus you from there. There won't be large numbers at OCC so YMMV.

Although he may swear in before OCS, he'll be sworn in again upon gradation at his commissioning ceremony. That ceremony takes place at the Marine Corps Museum (or it has every time I've seen it) just off base at Quantico and a stones throw from Devil Doc's home. That's the one you want to be at if at all possible. Get there early as parking is at a premium. I've never seen that lot so full as on this day.

Please pass my congratulations along to your son. Tell him to keep working on that physical fitness! It never ends.

Contact me for area info if you like. There’s plenty of motel rooms and food in this AOR. Plus DC if you want to tour the capital.
