More cuts on the way.

Odierno blamed lawmakers for soldiers losing their jobs. He told reporters that he recently received about 40 letters from members of Congress asking him not to cut soldiers from bases in their districts.

“I wrote back and said the reason I’m taking soldiers out of your installations and out of your state is because of sequestration, not that I want to do it,” he said.

Odierno told reporters that he has “grave concern” about the shrinking size of the Army, and he is reassessing the risks of additional force level cuts in light of crises on multiple continents.

I don't recall the Congress mandating a troop reduction, rather it was Army's decision to reduce troops to fund "modernization" effort.

I just got back from Afghanistan a few weeks ago. Several people in my brigade (to include captains and majors) received pink slips. It was kind of scary. Most of these people had exceptional service records and were actively participating in combat operations.

Don't worry the guys in rear like our CG will get their 20--30 yr retirement and some type of disability without ever being close to a bullet.

Does CG stand for commanding general or coast guard? The Coasties were deployed with us as customs inspectors and I doubt you could find a commanding general these days without a combat patch.

How many Coasties? And were they located at a port?

Glad you are home. Thank You for your service! I hope you get some well deserved rest.

A dig on the Coast Guard? My son said all the US military branches were there. America's best! He was glad they were there. Everyone looked out for each other.

No, it's a fact!

What exactly is the "Fact"

The fact that the CG does not deploy the same numbers as the other services despite they are a fraction of the size.

The fact that they are after all the "Coast" Guard

The fact that there are actually members of the CG that stay in til retirement, just as there are in every service.

The fact there are members of the CG that are on disability, I don't think they have an exclusive on that.

Or is there something I'm missing?

I apologize for the ignorance ahead of time. I didn't realize that Coast Guard was also deployed overseas until this thread. I think my understanding of the role of the Coast Guard is wrong. Would someone mind explaining what the main/primary role(s) of the Coast Guard is and how that translates to overseas duty?

Thank you in advance

Like I said, the CG folks I encountered at Bagram were customs inspectors. They scanned my bags and inspected the vehicles and connexes we shipped back to the states. They weren't on patrols; just inspections. I didn't know they deployed until I saw them this deployment.
