Off to LDAC

Not sure if everyone is aware, but the best source for 2014 LDAC photos appears to be the separate AROTC SmugMug site. You can find it at armyrotc.smugmug.com. Once you get in you have to click on the gallery for LDAC (there is a separate gallery for LTC if that's what you want), then click on your cadet's regiment. Once there, they have separate galleries for the different training evolutions such as weapons training, land nav, APFT, confidence course, accessions brief, etc. My son is in 1st Regiment, so they have 9 or 10 galleries up now, averaging maybe 8 pictures per. Have only seen my son in two shots, but still nice to see. I always check for new galleries daily since there is so little content on FB, and the kid sure don't write...

The thing I find strange is that the 7th and 8th Regiments' "Arrival Day" albums are the same photos. So does that mean they both arrived on the same day? There was a schedule but they took it down because the dates were wrong and now if a new one is up, I couldn't find it. (Didn't spend much time looking though.)

Yes they arrived on the same day. The photographer probably could not tell which Regiment they were in when they were at the Airport. I have a schedule I can send you but I'm sure it has changed by now with all the heat problems.

If it stayed the same from years past, 2 Regiments arrive on the same day, then are split up and flip flop training days.

I was just curious if it was a mistake, or if there was a reason it was like that. Good to know there was a reason! Thanks for the explanation!

LDAC Update

Great Advice, Heat Casulaties can be very dangerous and often include some significant hospital time. Fort Knox is a a very warm place. You really need to drink a lot of water on and off duty. Really need to take this one seriously.

Heat unbearable. At least 2 cadets in hospital with coma because of heat related issues. One cadet unable to commission because of permanent damage. Activity schedule changing daily because of heat issues. Cadre responding well to heat challenges trying to prevent injury. Land nav now based on reaching 3/5 points and with buddy. Running track soft and sandy. Mail much appreciated.
Guessing most every cadet could have written these words.

Not the kind of news you like to hear.

This does make you wonder why LDAC seems to have so many issues, Do they have the same issues at Benning for Infantry and Ranger school over the summer. My older son went through SERE-C in August in Alabama, they had no heat related issues, and that training makes this look like a trip to Disneyland.

Do some cadets not prepare by hydrating long before they get there or is it more the fact that there are such a large number during a short time that make the heat casualty percentage higher.

Glad to hear they are working on the heat issues, I hope all the cadets remain safe and best of luck to all of them, our thoughts to those that are in the hospital.

It's beginning to sound like there is less concern on how they score, and more concern that they just make it through safely.

This and IBOLC are no comparison to SERE. Do they really eat bugs?

Amazing thing about Heat Casualty is that sometimes that girl or that guy that barely pass the PT tests have no issues and the super athletes do. It's how you prepare. Drink water even on off days. Avoid any tobacco and alcohol which suck the water from you the next day. Really dont screw around with this.

Prayers for the two cadets mentioned here. It is a very scary thing to go through.

Maybe this should move back to Fort Lewis.

Bugs??, that's dessert.

Let's just say his comment about food was "Copperheads do not taste like chicken"

We actually ate slugs during survival training, of course we roasted them over a small fire first....Yum.

Mostly you just starve.

I have heard from many (more than 5) parents who have letters and a package returned to sender. I saw they changed their address on the website from 24 Rhineland to 22 Rhineland. Surely, someone could walk the mail next door! We will see if any of mine come back next week...
I know my DS was hydrated when he left, but his PT test was scheduled for this morning, so unless he was provided water over the last 7 days, his conditioning was for naught. Nothing in our Southwest heat can prepare you for 100% humidity...

Received letter from DS and also have seen post on a reddick forum for cadets that state the standards in many cases have been revised lower due to the heat issues. I personally have mixed feelings about this, but would not have anyones child put unnecessarily at risk of heat injury. I can only imagine how the LDAC scores will be squared away for OML in the fall.

On a lighter note -- anyone venturing down to Ft Knox for REG 1 & 2's graduation/family day celebrations? PM me if you'd be interested in meeting.

The Army won't be putting Cadets in unnecessary risk at Ft Knox LDAC. These Cadets aren't training to be Yoga instructors, they are training to be soldiers. Army training has an element of risk regardless of how safety concerns are addressed. The Army trains in the extreme heat all the time. They done it for generations. They have never done it better than they do it now.

Just heard from DS..he is in the 10th reg. Interesting things.....They were told it has been confirmed that this will be the last LDAC. His reg will not be doing the Physical fitness test due to the heat and only going to be doing one Land Nav. He just arrived this past Friday, he and his fellow cadets are wondering how all of this will play out with their evals.

When you say this will be the last LDAC, do you mean 10th reg is the last one this summer, or next summer there will be no LDAC?

I really don't understand not taking the PT test. Morning temps vary from 57°-72° this week. How is that too hot for PT?

On that note, does anyone know if 7th and 8th regs took their PT test? They haven't uploaded any photos all week.

Last year for LDAC.

As for PT testing, they were told they had 3 heat casualties during the latest test that took place. He said 9th reg and on would not be taking them. Apparently the high number of cadets having issues is cause for enough concern to halt it.

I read an article, I wish I could find it, a while back that said they were planning to transition away from LDAC as it has been known. The replacement would be more of a training event rather then an evaluation. I guess this would put more weight on the battalion eval which will be a real transition now that they are eliminating FTX and STX Lanes in ROTC. With the addition of the standardized testing and the training between the freshman and sophomore year, they seem to be transitioning more toward the WP model as far as summer training.

Big changes to say the least, it will be interesting to see how things develop next year.

I heard that the track they used for the APFT has turned to mush, could be one of the reasons for ending the PT Test. I would imagine they will just eliminate the score for all cadets and just use the battalion score since it was worth more this year anyway. It also sounds like Land Nav isn't counting either, makes one wonder what exactly they will be evaluated on, a lot of garrison I imagine.

Just heard that all cadets, with the exception of heat casualties, will be receiving an automatic S for LDAC. Assuming this is accurate, it seems the LDAC score will be a non-factor in this year's accessions.

Well that's interesting, guess it takes the stress off the cadets during LDAC. I guess this will help some and hurt some depending on how they stand without LDAC. I have a feeling most cadets are just going to be glad when this year is over.
