My spouse is joining the Naval Reserve as a Direct Commisioned Officer. Can anybody suggest a book to bring us up to speed on Naval procedures, protocol, etc?

How about The Bluejacket's Manual, or The Naval Officer's Guide, for a start? You can buy them online from the US Naval Institute Pres. You may also enjoy browsing the entire US Naval Institute Press web site (they have more interesting books than I will ever have time or money to read):

If you go to http://www.navyreading.navy.mil/, you can find suggested reading lists for junior enlisted, leading petty officers, division officers, etc. There are quite a few novels on the list (i.e. Ender's Game or The Caine Mutiny) that show examples of good and bad leadership. The same list is shown in a different format at:

A doctor in the medical corp.

We tried the Bluejackets Manual. It seemed to be geared toward the enlisted man. We bought the Naval Officers Guide and it seems to be perfect. Thanks for the help.

That is the book the recruiter suggested. We were told we could probably get a copy at the base exchange.
