Aren't you not supposed to blatantly expose your political views like that as a military officer? Or am I missing something?

Nope you're not missing anything. He doesn't have the right to voice his opinion while in uniform or identifiable as an Army officer and will probably be facing UCMJ action. He apparently doesn't quite understand the difference between being a contractor for KBR and a soldier.

I'm probably wrong, but isn't this not a political issue and more of a legal/constitutional issue?

what shocked me is the guy is in his 40's
In his letter, Easterling said he was a KBR contractor in Iraq in 2005 and 2006, then joined the Army when it raised the maximum enlistment age to 40. He said he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a second lieutenant in August 2007.

He has stated he knows he will have to face consequences for this action, which may include conduct unbecoming an officer.

The Army has two choices, throw the book at him or "ask" him to resign his commission and just fade away. If they opt for the second, he can then go back to work for KBR making five times the money he is making as a Lt. (which might be his plan all along).

I was thinking that also!
