If one does not receive a scholarship in ROTC (more specifically NROTC) and wants to pursue a career in the military, can they still be an officer? Or do they have to enter as enlisted after college?

Yes...short answer.
Longer more involved answer...
Enroll as a college program midshipman and compete for the 4 year scholarship again. Also you will compete for a 2 or 3 year sideload scholarship.
You can also go a non-scholarship route through NROTC.
You can also attended OCS after you graduate.

If you are referring to earning "Advanced Standing", we were told this week that the Navy is doing away with advanced standing in leiu of offering more sideloaded scholarships.

That is what I was referring to. NavyNOLA may have insight and confirm that.

They are doing away with advanced standing this year or in future years? Aren't they giving out a lot or 2 year scholarships and advanced standing this year?

We were told the same thing. They are working with the college program students to get them the scholarships but encourage applying for both, the four year and the side loaded scholarships and VTCC has been very successful in getting them. Their advice is that with the military, you just have to keep asking and don't stop. It also helps to have the applicable ROTC CO to do the interviews once they get to school because it seems to carry more weight with the Boards.

JaxNavyMom111,

Sounds like we were in the same NROTC briefing at Virginia Tech. We were there for orientation on the 12th & 13th. Were you there then? I recall there was a female cadet there from Florida.

Yes, we were there at the same time and we were the only ones from Florida that I know of. There are other kids from Jax going to VA Tech but not the Corp that I am aware of so it must be us that you remember. [emoji4]

So if I do go into the non-scholarship route in NROTC, I'm still able to become an officer? Thank you again for replying :)

Corp of Cadets does allow midshipman to remain in the ROTC program for all 4 years, (I think to be in the corp you must be in a ROTC program). Your opportunity to become an officer would be to earn a scholarship or earn advanced standing. With these two options you would commission as an officer after graduation. If you do not earn a scholarship or advanced standing, after graduation you could apply and attend OCS.

@5Day, I think it's the other way around. ROTC Cadets have to be in the Corps of Cadets but cadets do not have to be in ROTC. You can do the Citizen Leader Track.

You still have to be on scholarship or earn advanced standing to stay in the ROTC but you could stay in the Corps.

You do not have to enter as enlisted. Join your college's NROTC program as a "College Program" student and reapply for the scholarship. Even if you are never awarded one you can apply for Officer Candidate School after graduation and having been involved in the NROTC program is a great way to show your interest and commitment to serving in the Navy. Our friend's son did just that and is in flight school for the Navy now! Also, I want to extend a welcome to the incoming VTCC parents on this post!! It is an amazing program (our youngest son will be a senior this fall, NROTC) and will be one of the Company Commanders - it can be overwhelming for them at first but keep encouraging them - they will eventually thrive!!!!

My son is doing AF Rotc with no scholarship. He wouldnt qualify even if he had a 4.0 as his major doesnt qualify. He will be an officer when he finishes school and will be off to UPT (flight school) as soon as they call him up
