We are taking our DS to visit MMA this week. Any suggestions on what "Not To Miss"?

Deli On The Green right across the street from baker hill tavern wins my nomination. Best iced coffee in the U.S. and dare I say the world.
 
Don't know where you live so don't know what might appeal to you. We loved walking around old Great Neck and looking at all the small off-chain stores and getting some local pizza. DS and his friends routinely went to the pizzeria right across from the Great Neck train station. They said it was the best in town.

It was very good. We got to spend time with quite a few of the current Plebes and 1C1's that are playing football. Interestingly, the Plebes all told him to go Air Force but everyone else told him Sea Year and football make everything else worth it and to choose KP. The coaches and other staff folks really didn't "sell it", they laid everything out with the good, the bad, and the ugly so he could make his own decision but they really seem to want him. Assuming he get's accepted at KP and USAFA, he'll have a hard choice to make between the two. They are very different in a LOT of ways but the opportunities afterwards are also very different.
 
So glad you had a productive visit. My son is being recruited for Track. We had our visit back in September. Hopefully he will have the opportunity to attend KP. Good luck to your son.
 
QBDad - I'm bringing my son up in a couple of weeks. He plays football also so I've been following your thread & comments with great interest.

Here is what my DS had to say: School = not so good (facilities or lack there of, some teachers and the Plebe year BS), Football (coaches and fellow teammates) and Sea Year = Totally make it worth it, After graduation= $$$$$$$ or lots of choices.
 
Hi, we are trying to schedule a visit for our DD. Did any of you schedule an overnight visit? Is it too late to do this? We are trying for feb. vacation week.
 
You can schdule a visit through admissions - we worked through the football coach but I have seen details for scheduling a visit on the USMMA website.
 
Students interested in visiting the Academy should call, toll free, 1-866-546- 4778, or 516-726-5646 to schedule an appointment.
For prospective midshipmen, a visit to the Academy is strongly encouraged. Overnight visits are limited to high school seniors or graduates who are applying to the Academy. In order to schedule a visit, students must have completed Part I and Part II Forms of the Academy's application.

Overnight Visit (Tuesday and Thursday)
This consists of an admissions orientation briefing and accompanied overnight stay. Students must arrive at the Admissions Center no later than 10:30 a.m. At that time, they may meet with an admissions recruiter who will provide information and answer questions. At 12:00 Noon, visiting students are paired with midshipman escorts for a lunch at Delano Hall. They then attend afternoon classes and early evening activities, such as sports practices and club meetings. Visiting students will have dinner with the Regiment of Midshipmen in Delano Hall and will stay overnight in the midshipman escort's room. The following morning, they will have breakfast in Delano Hall, and attend morning classes with their escort.

Just some input...the Plebe year "BS" applies at all Service Academies. Teacher "issues", exist at many higher education institutes, and part of being a M/N at USMMA is managing ALL of the challenges, and succeeding in spite of them. Once of the the great sayings about Kings Point, "Not a great place to BE, but a GREAT place to be FROM", if he sees himself sailing, or going active duty, USMMA is the place. If he wants to fly and definitely go active duty, AFA may be better. IMHO only
 
As a parent I have found the academy to be pretty relaxed. I was expecting it to be much more strict and rigorous. There have been lots of opportunities for Liberty into the city.

AMF - I wasn't dissing on the USMMA or at least I didn't mean to. I was just paraphrasing my 18 y/o DS. He is fully aware that freshman year at any service academy is a lot different from any other college.
