So if that is the case, Brown will only give a nomination to someone who does not get nominated by their Congressman or Portman? That doesn't seem to make sense. I would think that he would want to nominate the most deserving candidates, not just those who cannot get a nom from any other source...

I should have clarified my comment. My DS had an LOA with an MOC nom and in that instance he would not get one from either Senator. In any case, Brown and Portman submit two different slates. You get a nom from one you won't from the other but won't preclude getting one form the MOC, again, with the LOA exception. My apologies for the confusion.

Confused....

D received Nom from Congressman to all three academies but just today received letter from Portman saying no nomination due to other MOC nominating her. Does that mean Brown has nominated her also or just the local Congressman. She does not have a LOA. Any help is appreciated.

My son has a nom from both Senator Brown and his district MOC. He received a letter from Senator Portman today stating he wouldn't receive one from him since he already had a nom from Brown. I think its only Brown and Portman that will not nominate the same candidate.

Can anyone validate that it is only the two Senators that coordinate the nominations?
I would think it would make sense to nominate the best candidate? I am confused how you can be one of the best in your state but not in your district. Our Congressman has already nominated D to all 3 academies. Portman same letter as others have received, waiting on Brown. My guess is D will get nomination from Brown, however nothing yet?

ThePatternisFull, I asked the same question and got clarification. If your letter from Portman said you did not get a nomination from him because you already have a nom from another MOC, it means you will not get a nom from Brown. Brown's noms went out about a week ago. Those folks received letters from Portman stating that they did not get a nom because their office is aware that they received a nom specifically from Brown. I am guessing Brown's "sorry" letter will be showing up in mailboxes next week. Bummer:(

DD got a nomination from her MOC (OH -7) back in November.
She received a letter from Brown last week (no nomination because of MOC)
She received a letter from Portman yesterday (no nomination because of MOC)
She did have a LOA so she only needed 1 nomination and both of the Senator's letters referenced this fact.
So I would assume that there is at least some level of coordination between Ohio's senators & MOC offices.

One thing that seems to be missing in this discussion is that the MOC's have a great deal of latitude in their style of selecting nominees. It has not been unknown in Ohio that the senators will coordinate their selections to ensure that the maximum number of candidates will have an opportunity to earn an offer of appointment. With the political split we currently have in Ohio the probability of members of the House participating in the coordination is enhanced. Also, it is my understanding that one of the senators has no slots available to one of the service academies. As I have preached for almost 20 years, candidates need to do their best to be the best candidates they can be, and they need to hedge their bets as the selection processes in play tend to take some unpredictable bounces on the way to making offers of appointment.

"Also, it is my understanding that one of the senators has no slots available to one of the service academies."
This is correct Senator Brown does not have a slot at the AFA.

1964 BGO help me understand your comment...they need to hedge their bets. How?
