I have received nominations to attend USAFA from Congressman Dave Joyce (OH-14) and Senator Rob Portman. I was notified today that I won't be getting a nomination from Senator Brown because I was already nominated by Senator Portman.

Congrats, HardWorker. Just curious.. when did you receive notification from the Senators, and how did you receive it? Thanks!

I received a letter from Senator Portman dated December 22, 2016. The letter from Senator Brown was dated December 27, 2016. I would assume all their nominees have been selected, but I'm not sure.

DS received noms from Senator Portman and Congressman Joyce (OH-14) for USNA and USMMA. Brown said in a letter rec'd yesterday that since DS got nom from Senator Portman, he would not be getting one from Senator Brown so they could give the greatest chance to the largest number of OH applicants to SAs. Seems like a fair approach. Portman came 12/22, Joyce came late November.

Have received noms to USMA, USNA, USMMA, and USAFA from Congressmen Wenstrup (OH-02) and USMA and USMMA from Senator Portman dated 12-22 as well.

In Ohio, at least while Portman and Brown are in office, they adopted what is called "coordinated" strategy a few years ago e.g. You get nominated from one to a a particular SA, the other won't nominate you to the same SA for the reasons they outlined in the letter. It wasn't always so nor is it the standard for every state. Additionally, they've also made the same effort, but not with equal success, to extend that to MOC's as well. In some cases, if they learn you have a MOC nom to an academy, they will withhold to "spread the wealth".

It's nice to have more than one nom for no other reason than it gives you an extra lottery ticket and options for the SA to place. Having said that, I'll state the obvious...you need a nom to get in, but just a nom(s) won't get you in.

Good info, Sydney... thanks! Not to be pedantic, but when your refer to MoCs, I'm assuming you mean Congressmen from the HoR since Senators are MoCs as well? In any event, that's interesting as a look at the appointments thread shows more than a few instances of Senator plus Congressmen for OH. As you say, that may be harder for the senators to monitor.

Yes, I should have clarified that. When I referred to MOC, I meant Congressmen.

DS received a nomination for the USNA, the USAFA, and the USMA from our representative. He received a letter from Portman stating that since he held congressional nominations already he would not be nominating him. He never received any correspondence from Brown at all. Is that odd?

DS is reapplicant and got noms from Portman and MOC for USNA and USMMA this year and from Brown and MOC last year. Like you, we did not get a notice from Brown this year but got a letter from Portman. We've talked to academy coordinators for senators Portman and Brown and they coordinate with each other to make sure that they give only 1 nomination between them to as to make sure they can give out more nominations to qualified applicants. They also advised that they would not identify a principle nomination to leave the decision about admission squarely in the hands of the academies. This gives more applicants the opportunity to be candidates for the academies and puts the academies in charge of determining the most qualified applicants for a position. It makes sense and seems like the most fair approach for the applicants.

Nope...Brown and Portman have been doing this for years this way and as noted above. They do spread the wealth.

I understand the duplicate nomination philosophy. Although they state do not, they actually do provide duplicate nominations of representatives. I find the lack of correspondence from Brown disheartening.
