Much to my " internal" displeasure my DS has decided to request a scholarship move from Norwich to VT. VTCC says slots do exist so it should not be a problem. I kind of dreaded that drive from Central NJ to VT vs the one to NU. Coming from a boys prep school the NU 3000 students vs VT 30,000 is an unknown. Bummed R&B not included :(. So I had pretty much been pouring myself into NU STUFF - dates, things to be aware of, Flying from Newark Ap etc, etc, etc. I would appreciate any incite as to what I need to know or watch out for at VT ( Other than the Troopers on 81 )

DS is AROTC , 3 Year , International relations Major ( Either French or Russian language ) or he may look to move to the National Security & International Affairs. Looks like I need to be down there for classes and uniform measurements in June Then looks like DS needs to be ready to go back Aug 11th.

Whatever info you feel is helpful is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Hokie Nation! I know I81 is rough, but one of the advantages of a school the size of VT is that there are a fair few students in the Corps and outside of it from NJ so you will have carpool options to help with transportation. There is usually an official VTCC run group for parents of a specific class which is an important source of info. There is also an unofficial, parent-run Facebook group that has parents from all classes. Not sure we're allowed to link to outside sites, so just search for Parents of VTCC Cadets on Facebook.

The New Cadet Parade is held the Saturday morning at the end of New Cadet Week and new cadets are released on pass until Sunday evening. If you can make the trip back I'd encourage you to go - the parade is always awesome. They also want new cadets out of the dorms as the upperclassmen are moving back in, but if you can't make it don't worry. Quite a few parents can't do both trips so those cadets stay with a bud's family for the weekend. Be warned that hotels for that weekend can fill up quickly, so make your hotel reservations soon if you will be going down.

May I ask why your DS made the switch..my DS has not looked at NU yet, but has seen VT, liked it very much. Like you, I am a little shocked that he has interest in such a big school ( always said wanted a small school) . His hopes are for USNA or USAFA, but looking at options for plans b,c,d etc. We are also on the East Coast

I think experiencing seeing a big Div 1 school like his sister went to added to that excitement. I actually like NU and it shows larger than it is They have a significant land size. He likes the town as compared to NU which has I think one red light and little to no sidewalks. He always enjoys going to the games at his school and participating in the cheer mobs that swell in an all boys school. When he get to driving there eventually he wil hate it LOL. NU was a easy flight from NJ and dirt cheap. Also liked the National Security major and the extra language options. NU only has French. Spanish. German and Chinese. And Rutgers Univ in 5 miles away and can't get bigger than that and he hates it so go figure. But he also really like the Corps and hit overnight. My opinion you can't go wrong with either. Came down to extras only found at a large school. Then I told him Room/Board was on him as NU was free. Which is about 5k per after that Leader scholarship is applied.

Thx. Been creeping around on FB already. And this is my last one off to college so my initial drop off , the cadet parade and yes parents weekend hotel rooms already booked. In Christiansen and across from campus.

I didn't go to school at VT, but instead went to a "what did I get myself into" school north of Blacksburg on I-81.

I've been to Blacksburg a few times though. For a wonderful, but pricey, meal in the downtown district, then I recommend 622 North. If you want a cholesterol bolus in a casual setting, then Macado's.

I would suggest that you take a look at Norwich if it's on your radar. We loved it. It was our clear choice until something else came up.

DS Saw NU and really liked it then saw VT and it happened that fast .
DS went to a small private high school with 300 students. He chose VTCC /AROTC 4 yr scholarship, engineering major, and he has never looked back. He absolutely loves it. Because the Corps of Cadets is segregated from the civilian student population on Upper Quad, it is different in many ways than the typical student's life at a huge public institution with 30k students.
