I tried to access the online placement test for spanish, but got a 404 PAGE NOT FOUND error.

Anyone else having this problem?

Tried it as school and at home.

spanish placement test

I didnt have this problem. there wasn't a deadline posted online (just says before I-day), so it's not like they removed that from the data collection part. All i can say is try again and if it still doesnt work, try calling your admissions counselor. He/she could have more information.

My son didn't have any problems doing it either. Well, actually, he had a lot of problems, but they were with the Spanish, not the accessing it!

I do know that when you did those other online forms (Appointee Data Collection) it said you needed to complete both of those forms before you could access the language tests. Are you accessing it from that page or trying to get to it directly?

what ?

wait im confused, I gave USAFA my acceptance during orientation and havnt received anything yet; whats this about language placement and data collection?

When we were at orientation, they had extra copies of the next packet of stuff you get after accepting your appointment. Had the immunization form, security form, and various other things that he got in the mail, but also the whole Appointee booklet which gave you information on doing a Spanish or German placement test online (if applicable) before I day (only for those two languages). But if you did take one of those languages, it said it must be done before I day.

He received a separate email for Appointee Data Collection. It just told you to go to https://admissions.usafa.edu/ and click on Appointee Data Collection. There were two different forms you had to go through (I recall one was mostly contact information and things like that and the other was info on class placement - where you thought you would be in math, etc. - I didn't pay that much attention when my son filled them out). It did say though that you had to do both of them to then be able to click on the language testing (even though that first booklet had given a direct website to go there). Incidentally, the Spanish test was NOT easy - either for my son (who's had 4 years of Spanish) or his brother (who was just watching, and has had 5 years of Spanish). A lot more indepth than he was expecting it to be!

if you can't complete it, don't worry- they give it during basic, also.

If we have taken four years of Spanish in high school do we have to take Spanish at USAFA? I would rather try to learn a strategic language. So do I take the online placement for Spanish to get into other languages or just Spanish because it says the test is to determine your placement into the appropriate Spanish class.

I tried to access it on the Stanford site provided in the Appointee booklet.

I'll try it from the USAFA site.

You can't just DECIDE to take a strategic language. You take a diagnostic test in basic, and USAFA will PLACE you in whatever language they want- you do put down 3 choices, though. So in essence, you don't really get a choice. The placement test is to determine your spanish class if they do decide to place you in spanish.

I knew that you can't just decide. That is why I said TRY to learn a strategic language, I should have said placed into. I was just hoping that just because I had taken Spanish in high school I had an opportunity to test into a different language. I did not mean to sound like I was choosing my language if I came off that way, but thank you for the information.

ILHunter92,

Yes, if you score at least decently on the DLAB and put strategic languages on your language choices and do not take the Spanish placement exam, then you'll most likely be placed in a strategic language. One of the reasons they label a language as a "strategic" language is because they need people to be fluent in it in the operational Air Force but don't have enough people.

Another reason why you'll likely not be in Spanish? More appointees come in with background in Spanish than any other language, and the Air Force simply doesn't need that many officers with background in Spanish - therefore many people with really good Spanish even get placed in other (often strategic) languages.

Just to be sure...I am still required to take the placement test although the only language class I had during high school was Spanish 2 my freshman year?

Ahh, I guarantee you'll appreciate an hour and half of doing nothing during BCT.
