Opportunities for licensed engineers?

Just wondering what the job prospects are for licensed engineers. Do you all see automation replacing engineering jobs in the future? Also, is it tough finding a job as a liscensed engineer in today’s market?

Engineers who graduate from USMMA are in high demand. I have not known any who had difficulty finding good job opportunities. As robots take over chunks of our economy, low skilled positions are the first to go. Even with automation increasing in many commercial ships, licensed engineers will still be needed into the foreseeable future.
 
Deckies are less in demand than engineers, but the prospects are still very good. You will definitely not have to live in your parents' basement or become a barista. Many Third Mates have job offers waiting at graduation with the companies they worked with at sea or in internships during sea year. Worst case scenario if you do not get an offer before graduation, is that you have to spend time checking in at a union hall for a few months before getting hired on.
 
Check glassdoor.com for opportunities for marine engineers. I am a finance guy with MBA and I can tell you that half of my MBA class was engineers. You can make a finance, marketing or entrepreneur guy from an engineer, but not vice versa. Only this argument I think is big when thinking about opportunities. As an engineer you have more choices - you can stay in your industry or branch out. I guess the skills acquired as an engineer have more wider application than skills as an accountant for example. It is up to you which path you will take. If you have little math/physics inclination go for an engineering degree. You might become a finance guy later in life, but you will have an eye of engineer. We own a naval architect company and can ALWAYS use well-educated talent. There are many openings in the industry looking for these qualified graduates. Engineers in this specific field will have no problem finding jobs in our country- East,West, South or Midwest regions all have openings.

USMMA engineers may be in high demand right now at the elevator company or the power plant, which they can't really do without a waiver. They aren't in high demand on the water on unlimited tonnage vessels. The blue water US flag fleet is contracting, and the industry is globalizing and removing cost inefficiencies such as American mates and engineers. You won't be in "high demand", rather, you'll have to look for a job. The "high demand" thing is a marketing slogan.
 
Being in the maritime field for over 25 years, there are plenty of opportunities for graduates from both USMMA and other State maritime schools. I for one have hired a number of deck and engineer king point grads right out of the academy over the past few years and am very happy with their abilities. All making over a 6 figure salary. There a strong alumni association with kings point.... grads will be fine!!!
