Hello,

I am wondering what DoDMERBs policy on braces are? Will I be DQ'd until i take them off? What if the treatment is not complete, but I will have them off by R-Day? Thank you for any help. I tried looking at the DoDMERB site but i cant find any clear and concise info that answers my question. Thanks for your time.

From what I've heard, you need them off before R-day, but its okay to have them during the application process. I don't think they dq you until there off.

DoDMERB's standards for orthodontics has changed a quite a bit recently, and I'm not sure I have the current info so I'll give you what I do know, and double check next week.

If you currently have orthodontics you will be found disqualified by DoDMERB. DoDMERB will not remove the disqualification until the orthodontics have been removed (retainers or permanent retainers do not count). The waiver authorities for the service academies should grant waivers if there is a statement from the orthodontist stating the braces will be removed before I/R-day. For ROTC most of the waiver authorities will grant waivers if the braces will be removed before commissioning.

Again, I'll double check my info next week and let you know.

uhduh,

Thanks for the reminder, you know how it is for us gray hairs.. we'd forget out names if we hadn't stenciled it into our underwear.

I am correct with my above statement. As long as you have braces on it will be a disqualification.

NROTC and braces clarification

I read above that NROTC will give waivers if braces are off before commissioning. If son is freshman on scholarship and orthodontist wants to put him in braces this fall then that is acceptable and won't affect scholarship?? Just wondering since dentist said he may need them eventually. I'm assuming they would be off in 18-24 months since that it usual time frame which would mean before junior year.

I don't think there will be a problem, but I would have your son contact his detachment personnel to make sure there is no problem.
