My DS just submitted his orthodontic form and it showed active treatment to be completed in June 2020. The orthodontist previously told him completion in December 2019. The DODmerb site now shows him as disqualified due to active treatment. Is this standard procedure no matter when the treatment is complete or is it because it’s too close to I-day? Is it worthwhile for him to go back to Ortho and ask for re-evaluation or does he leave it in hands of academies to request waiver?

So your ortho said originally treatment would conclude in December ‘19, but on the form he wrote June ‘20? If that’s the case I would clear that up with ortho. I believe you have to have appliances off for a certain amount of time and yes June, imo, is cutting it close. If I understand your post correctly, it would be beneficial to have something stating end of treatment as sooner rather than later. I would make sure ortho understands the importance of the timing.

So he went back to orthodontist and had orthodontist re-evaluate and update form to show braces will come off April 1. He resubmitted paperwork last week and got email messages today that now shows qualified!

This is a really good example of making sure your provider understands the nuances of obtaining an appointment, specifically making it through medical. Anyone considering a lengthy treatment plan needs to pay attention to these kinds of things and make sure your medical provider does as well. Often treatment can be managed in a way that works....planning for this is a good idea if you are considering pursuing an appointment. Especially treatments that are months long.

Glad yours worked out!

My DS completed orthodontic treatment 3 weeks prior to reporting, and he received a waiver. Yes, it was a little bit tense to cut it that close, but treatment (6 years) was pretty complicated. Just to be clear, it is acceptable to have to be in a retainer as long as the braces are off before you have to report. Glad you got your waiver!
