There's another person from my high school applying to the AFA, same year as me. He's basically a shoe-in though, as both his parents are AFA Alumni, and he had good grades, etc.. I, however, don't have parents in the Air Force; does this automatically mean I won't get accepted? I also have good grades, extracurriculars, and can stand out in my application, but does having someone at my high school with parent alumni automatically make me not considered the same as I would otherwise?

No. You will be considered on your own merits. When my DD applied, she and another person from her own class were both offered appointments from her high school. Best advice is to keep your eyes looking straight ahead and not to worry about others. Your goal right now should be to receive a nomination without spending your life energy on what you cannot control.

When my son applied to the academies, I always stressed to him to control what he can control. No sense in worrying about anything outside of your control.

I went to Air Academy High School in Colorado. It's a school district 20 high school, ON THE GROUNDS of USAFA!!

Six members of my high school class applied to USAFA. Three made it to the class of 1982!!!

The other three? They went to various prep schools for a year and then made it to the class of 1983.

FYI...one of those six went to the navy, became a SEAL, and an admiral, and was the deputy commander of naval special warfare. His boss? He was another member of USAFA 1983!!!

Out of my son's public high school:

4 to USMA
3 to USAFA
2 to USNA

It happens ALL the time...keep grinding.

Texas...900 kids per class. Respected school in a big, military friendly city.

Yes, everything is bigger...

As a Viking fan, I might challenge how “big” the cowboys are. So not everything.

But damn ... those are big classes! I bet the football teams are pretty good.
