My DS is returning from NASS today so he missed his HS awards ceremony but his guidance counselor called to tell me he was awarded a Rensselaer award ( $25k/ yr for 4yrs) if accepted & attends. My question is, if he were awarded a ROTC scholarship, can he still use this one in addition?

Depends on the school. My son had several full tuition and some full tuition/partial to 3/4 living. It depends on the school. Congrats! Early to be getting awards. It all goes by super fast!

Some of the schools would be cutting him a check and some would pull the merit funding.

Depends on school and scholarship/grant. DS has a State DVA Tuition and fees scholarship due to my VA Disability rating, he has PELL, VA Chapter 35 (which is a monetary straight to him school only does the certification) and a State education scholarship that pays a per credit hr amount based on SAT/ACT, GPA and Volunteer hours. And when he contracts the school actually gives a credit for the least expensive dorm room. The State DVA is ONLY tuition/fees so that can't be traded out to cover something else. The State grant and Pell pay college expenses which include things not bought at the school right now it is covering the room and part of the meal plan. So when he contracts will choose it cover Room and board so he can keep the high meal plan and whichever room he wants since even the most expensive does not go above the 10k limit especially with the credit from the school. With the ROTC added bonus of monthly pay and book stipend he will be making a great nest egg for graduation. Apply for every scholarship they can find but know the rules on if a scholarship or grant will reduce those things like PELL that are based on total need not just school direct expenses!

When my DS was looking at schools, RPI was one that gave free room and board to ROTC Scholarship winners. My DS also got the Rensselaer Award, but it really would not have been used had he gone to RPI, as it already would have been free tuition with the ROTC scholarship and their free room and board offer, making it a full-ride scholarship. They will not pay out any additional funds in excess of the "free ride."

Congrats! My daughter received the same award from her high school (but chose to attend that other three letter school based in Boston). Since the Rensselaer Medal is only for RPI, you really need to contact them directly and see what their policy is. As USMAROTCFamily mentioned above, there doesn't seem to be much to cover since PRI gives free room and board.
