Our DS declined his USMA offer for the Class of 2021 this morning after receiving an appointment from another SA.
For all those hoping for a spot with USMA, we are keeping our fingers crossed and prayers lifted that one of you will hear news today.
If you accept USMA and then decline another SA, we hope you will post it to give others hope.
Thanks to all for your support through this process...KEEP THE FAITH

DS declined USAFA 2 months ago; was feeling the same that a worthy 3Q would get some belated good news.
But 2nd week of June is getting tight !!

Uhm.....Decision day was May 1st, last I checked. I don't think that West Point will just appoint another person after everything has already pretty much been finalized. That spot is probably just wasted.

If you read many posts by Christcorp, usually under the USAFA section, you will understand that a "spot" is not wasted.

All the SA's offer more appointments than what they need to fill the class and numbers they want for that incoming class; and, not just a few. It is normal and typical for an SA to offer 1400+ appointments to fill a class in which they only want 1200 or so. Each SA knows they will have appointees not show up, change their mind to serve at all, choose ROTC instead or, as in this case, a different SA.

Actually after speaking with admissions they advised that last minute changes/declines will be offered based on needs of that SA.
On some occasions, a candidate can be offered an appointment because of a cancellatio, all the way up to R/I-Day.

Highly doubt that it will be wasted if they are under the ideal number. WP isn't going to let that happen. Not everyone receives their offers by May 1st. They've earned the right to accept or decline after May 1st if their next offer came late. No person knows the circumstances but them. Whatever the reason is for the decline they are making the best choice for them. Hopeful for the next person waiting to hear good news!

The point is that there is not necessarily a one-for-one relationship between turndowns and additional appointments. The academy will not make additional offers until it considers itself under-enrolled. For example, if 1300 appointments were given to get a desired incoming class of 1000, an additional appointment won't be necessary until the incoming class is at 999 (after the 301st turndown) and, yes, an appointment can happen right up until R-Day if that class is under-enrolled.

@rlrmilitarymom Did he get into USNA? Off the wait list?
YES! West Point will fill the class--even the day before R-Day so there is plenty of time for someone else's dream to come true!
Best wishes to your boy and your family RLR.

Thanks DrMom...Navy has been our sons first choice since he was 8 years old. We were so thankful for the appointment from USMA, but his heart was still with USNA. When that offer came through...we knew the good Lord answered his prayers! Take care and best of luck

What happens if there are 1000 spots and 1200 accept. Do they take everyone?

They won't offer that many to start with. Each SAs have an accepted % rate they shoot for call yield rate. It would be an extreme rare case for a SA to have 200 more accept than planned. A few years ago USNA had a much higher rate than planned and it was by maybe 20, not 200z USNA has a very high yield rate. Many times they will end up with a handful or so more than planned and they all come. They are careful on numbers to prevent this.

First one I have heard to come off the USNA wait list. Congrats!

USMA & USNA have higher yield rates (mid 80's%) than Harvard (low 80's%) or any other college in the country. Other Ivies range from 50% - 70%. Much easier for SA's to manage yield.

USAFA Class of 2017 demographics - note the number of appointments and number who actually started BCT. So it is not as simple as a 1:1 decline:replacement from the waitlist issue. Not a wasted slot at all.

The Stats

— 1,475 cadets were offered appointments into the Class of ‘17

— 1,190 were inducted into the Academy

— 77.1 percent, or 917, of those inducted were men

— 22.9 percent, or 273, of those inducted were women

— 29.9 percent, or 356, were minorities

— 46 percent, or 532, were potentially pilot qualified

— 16 cadets were international, or foreign exchange, students

Best of luck to your son at USNA! The spot won't be wasted at all. A spot is only truly "wasted" when an appointee does not show up for R-Day. I was told there were 4 or 5 of them last year.

Thanks for this info. I would love to see what the STATS are for the other SA

Every service Academy releases stats about a new class usually a few days or at Induction Day. If you google USXX Class Profile for a certain year you will find tons of info. It's pretty readily available. Each Academy releases sometimes slightly different info but for the most part 90%+ is the same.
