I would like to start an open discussion for parents and applicants. How did you hear about the nomination process for your state? For the academy seminar(s) hosted in your state, how did you hear about it?

In Ohio, we host 15 info nights across the state and try to work with the schools across the state to advertise, I am curious if you have a preference for how information is shared?

1: From attending Academy Forums, and as a junior by looking at MOC websites.
2: From flyer from academies initially, then from parent groups our DS signed up with at the forums
3: Wish there were more info relayed directly to rural high schools, and more forums in rural areas. Forums really are run well and give candidates and youngsters a great option to speak directly with cadets/mids and reps from admissions.

Most of it was from Mr Google and friends. Each MOC's site had a link with nom instructions, deadlines, app, etc

Thank you for the feedback. We do our best to provide as much detail as possible to applicants, so I want to make sure we are using the best platform. This is a hard process for many to navigate, so our goal is to provide the as much detail as possible.

How involved are counselors and principals? In our state (again, this can be different for each MOC), we try to advertise to every HS (sometimes to no avail).

Another curious question: going into the nomination process, is there something you wish your MOC's office did to provide more information?

I as a parent found out about usna when my then sophomore brought home a recruiting letter from usna coach, that had been sent to his HS coach. Had never heard of a SA before that. He wouldn’t have applied to one (so thankful to that volunteer recruiter that put in HOURS exploring stats online!!). So his packet had a ton of info and things to return, that opened the communication line for him. After his counselor knew he was applying, she forwarded a MOC service academy open house, when DS got his info. That’s how he connected with nomination process.

It blows my mind 🤯 sometimes to think how that ONE letter changed so much in our family: youngest is also currently applying, oldest joined ANG. And how things could have been SO different. I personally believe it’s been a (divinely) led process too, as a person of faith.

My personal opinion, is that getting word out through the schools would help. Don’t really know how that’s accomplished. In our case, we pretty much educated admin more than getting info FROM them. But a career counselor could identify prospects. I also know some school admins stay away from military stuff. I know our career counselor has applied to the counselor “training” event hosted by USNA but hasn’t been selected.

I have offered myself as a resource to our school. I know there are BGO’s for this...we don’t have one FROM our school. So as a parent, if counselor had a student/parent want info from a student/parent I would guide them to BGO.

And the forums of course 😂

I have offered the same. Our previous Guidance counselor was very familiar having done the training and guided a student through admission. Our current had no knowledge, but was happy to work through it. I have let them know I would be happy to assist if needed for NROTC or SA apps.
