I have looked around, and most information I am finding is regarding ROTC scholarships. Perhaps there is a link someone can provide?

Wondering about if outside, private scholarships can be used, and whether this is common or not? And if they can, how does that ACTUALLY work? About the only reference beyond ROTC that I have found, is that they cannot be NEED based. As in tuition is already paid.

Part of me feels like what is already earned is enough, so don't be greedy, part of me feels that DS deserves to compete for everything he can as he has worked hard towards earning scholarships his whole academic career....but that's another point. Interested in opinions though!

Keep plowing through this USNA forum - there are several threads, because the questions pop up every year on:
- how some external scholarships can be applied to USNA expenses
- what is the ACE Loan
- what is the pay
- what expenses will my mid have
- why groups won’t give my Plebe-to-be scholarship money because he already has an appointment
- and more!

As always, if you read every page, drop-down and link on USNA.edu, you can find info like this:

Be sure to click the Midshipman Stipend Budget Book link.

Some scholarship money can be applied to the ACE Loan, which all plebes take to cover initial expenses, and repayment comes out of their pay. The ACE Loan ensures that regardless of financial situation, an appointee can report in with a handful of paperwork and essentially the clothes on their back. The USNA Midshipman Disbursing Office has been handling these issues for years.

As for scholarships, your DS isn’t a Plebe until he is, on I-Day, and scholarships can be part of Plan B.

Embarrassed to say, didn't think of looking on the website....and very good point about still holding a plan B (knocking on wood).

Some families send in the deposit for the Plan B school as insurance in the dreaded event something happens and anything can happen right up to I day. Skateboards, pick up basketball game, an unseen stone running in preparation for Plebe summer. You can't bundle them in bubble wrap and most of these kids want to do things where people can get hurt.
