Overnight Visit

- What’s the biggest takeaway for him?
- is USMA still #1 on list ( assuming if it was #1 before visit)?
- has he visited any other SA? If yes, what are his thoughts when comparing both experiences?

-His biggest takeaway was that he would have great opportunities in space science at Army. Similar to Navy. He was at SLE at Army this past summer, but this was a much different experience. He was glad to have this opportunity.
-He is really torn between Army and Navy.
-He has done an overnight at Navy. Biggest difference was no morning workouts at Army before breakfast. He liked the extra sleep!!

-Army is extremely selective with overnight trips, he had to have an LOE or LOA. Navy seems to let a much larger number of candidates attend. USAFA does not offer an overnight until an appointment has been given.
 
When we visited during the summer, we asked the admissions 2LT that we met with about PT in the morning. He said no one does PT before breakfast during the academic year. My DS was disappointed lol. But, if you follow the commandant on instagram (great follow, btw), you'll find that he hosts FREQUENT optional workouts that look like great, crossfit-style workouts, presumably to get ready for the new army fitness assessment test.

One was brought to my attention:
"Army is extremely selective with overnight trips, he had to have an LOE or LOA."

I always wondered if we can find any statistics on the number of LOEs issued to prospective candidates.

When I checked the appointment threads for the previous years, some candidates reported LOE vs. LOA. Very interesting.

I understand that LOE doesn't guarantee anything but it would be meaningful if LOE was issued only to outstanding candidates.

I hope that we can see more statistics about LOE vs. LOA.

"Extremely selective" was based on some info or data? I am just wondering.

Based on feedback and information that was given at the time of the visit. I think it is just where Army is not wasting their time, nor the applicants time with an overnight visit unless it is merited. There were roughly 75-100 kids there for a day visit and 4 there for an overnight visit.
 
Our son received the LOE and we were pleased to read it. Very complimentary. We would LOVE to send him for an overnight but being West Coasters it is virtually impossible to manage it with one night. Can't afford to fly 2 of us out and do a hotel at this point. If he is lucky enough to receive an appointment we will try to swing a visit then. Thank you for sharing and happy your kiddo had a great visit.

I was very surprised and pleased to see some good expressions on my LOE as well. I didn't have any idea about LOE and an Overnight Visit. What I am sure is that the process associated with LOE is truly encouraging candidates. As like many other candidates, I had been struggling from the dilemma between USMA and USNA. After an overnight visit, I am leaning toward West Point.

Although it's just one and a half day visit, all activities and involvements with cadets/plebes impacted my perspectives on West Point significantly.

You can find the best/optimum deal through Google Flight. My trip with my parent to West Point was cheaper than I thought because I was able to find a unbelievably good deal on flight as well as a rental car. It's a little more than one hour distance from West Point but the Newark Liverty International Airport had a really great deal on flight and a rental car. It's cheaper than a local roundup trip!

Only caveat was that we couldn't choose seats until the airline assigned them at the last minute. But it's really affordable. Just FYI.

yes, my son said the same thing about morning workouts at USNA vs. USMA based on his overnight visit at USMA and his CVW in March. That was actually my son's favorite thing in total about the two overnight visits - the camaraderie at the USNA morning workout.

That is interesting that you say that about your son. My son also really did enjoy the morning workout at USNA.

And what was even more interesting to me is that my son is not what you would call a gym rat, unlike my daughter who was a college athlete and works out 6x per week. He has always done sports but it is not his "identity" - he is more of a scholar and a musician. So it was the camaraderie and the "embracing the suck" aspect of them doing pushups in wet grass in 33 degrees that really inspired him I think - not the actual aspect of working out. He was disappointed they didn't do that at USMA.

Either you are a poorly adjusted adolescent, or a VERY poorly adjusted adult. In either case, you are on the fast track to banishment. Enjoy that, and remember, correction is supposed to smooth the rough edges off. We look forward to the improvements.

@Heatherg21 I didn't really feel like we should spend the money either for 2 of us to go out plus hotel but I found I had a couple free plane tickets so we went. However, I did read on this forum somewhere that someone successfully got a 17 year old in a WP-area hotel on their own. I asked Thayer Hotel prior to our trip and they said no but I feel like it was them where another person was successful or perhaps the Blue Star or whatever the military-affiliated hotel is nearby. I also imagine with AirBNB since there is no check-in procedures you could swing it but everything I found at the last minute was quite expensive nearby. Plus transportation would be very complicated for a 17 year old not being able to rent a car. But it could probably be done with Uber or some ground shuttle from Newark or the local Stewart airport. West Point Motel is within (longish) walking distance, FYI, and is where we stayed.
 
DS thought it was very funny when I told him the impressions from a few recent overnight visits was that they don't work out daily at West Point. His exact response was, "I don't need someone to hold my hand and watch me do a few pushups in the morning, when I am in the gym 2.5-3 hours a day, 7 days a week!! They should have stayed with me".. Only difference is on weekends he goes twice a day..
 
Funny! My son did work out with his plebe on the plebe's own schedule. I guess the difference is they don't seem to do the big morning workout as a company or whatever organizational unit like they do at USNA.
