Hi everyone,

I have a question about an item that I want to bring to Beast this summer, and this forum is only of my only resources for info. On the packing list, it states that no electronic devices are allowed. As a hoarder who loves keepsakes for memories, I want to bring a disposable camera. Does anyone know if this is allowed? Any insight would be great!!

NO! Bring what is on the packing list. They do not want you to have a disposable camera, they want you to have what is on the packing list.
Also, pro-tips: 1) NO WHEELIE SUITCASES for R-Day--get a duffle that throws over your shoulder and has handles and 2) PUT EVERYTHING in Ziplock baggies (the big gallon sized ones)--there will be a moment on R-Day when you are in a room with your company mates standing on tape X's on the floor. You will be asked to move everything from the home duffle to the Army duffel. You want to be able to pick up 2-3 baggies and move everything expediently. I know it seems weird, you will thank me if you ever think of it again.

Also Flowers, you will get your iPhone back after March Back and then you can take pictures of everything.
If you have a fancy camera, you can ask someone to bring it for A-Day.
Good luck.

Short answer - no cameras. However, if you have a good squad leader or chain of command, they will take lots of pictures. My son's squad leader took quite a few pictures of them throughout Beast and then she shared some of them with her squad at the end of Beast. On a side note, you likely will get your phone back during the detail change break mid way through Beast. That's an opportunity for you to take a few pics at your sponsors house and send them to moms and dads who will appreciate them.

I think the question is super dependent on who your leadership is and what they consider electronics. I would wait until the second detail and ask your squad leader what they think. (you'll get better pics at lake fredrick) If it's ok with them you can always get it shipped out. Don't forget- under no circumstances should you try to hide anything.

What does "second detail" mean? thank you!
The summer is broken up into two parts. The first three weeks are ingarrison w one set of cadet leaders. You learn how to set up your room, wear a uniform, get things issued etc…then you go to the ice cream social and then come back to new leaders…’second detail’ and the second part of Beast when you go the field.

If it's not on packing list, you might get in trouble for it. Plus, you won't be able to use it (or your celfon) until the mid-break of Beast (ice cream social). It'll be stored somewhere away from you and may be lost or damaged. Some in class of 2026 got back their phones with cracks, others lost some personal items. If you're bringing your phone, turn it OFF and stored in a padded phone case.

Do cadets need to pack the Washington's Crossing book for R-Day? It's not on the packing list, but the Book Memo in the portal says to "bring it with you when you report to West Point". It's heavy book so I'm hoping it can just be brought on A-Day.

Also I think both of my cadets left the book at home the entire time. But …

LOL - sounds like a stress free environment. Well put DrMom!

Hi All - Probably a dumb question but one of the recommended items on the Beast packing list is "Sports Type Wicking Underwear, Black or Gray, with no visible logos. We purchased some for our DS that meet all of the criteria - no logos but the brand name is on the elastic waistband and we haven't been able to find any that do not have the brand on the waistband. Is that considered a "logo"?

underwear can have a logo.
logos are only an issue when exposed.
mostly with pt gear and mostly athletic socks.

There is no underwear inspection or sock inspection. Just ensure that logos cannot be seen when you are wearing PT shorts.

Just an FYI on the ice cream social....It's really nice because you will go to a host house on Post and have all sorts of ice cream, candy and treats. You will get a chance to call or Facetime your parents and fill them in on how you are doing. HOWEVER BEWARE......that afternoon after all the ice cream you will have new cadre waiting to welcome you back to the barracks. It will be the hardest day of Beast, they will smoke you with PT and will be very much in your face that day. Enjoy the ice cream but be ready for the new cadre.

Thank you so much - and to confirm, PT socks have to be white, correct? Black are not an option?

What does it say on the packing list? If it says 'white athletic socks' then please get 'white athletic socks' if it says, "Black or White athletic socks" then let that be your guide. During the regular academic year and in the Army athletic socks can be black or white. However, during Beast it is all about the packing list.

It was hard yes…

But also take advantage of the food your sponsors give you. I kind of went into it with the “if I barf I barf” attitude and don’t regret it. Please enjoy the ice cream and talking with friends and family. Overall, the ice cream social day was a good day, and honestly the smoking when we got back was kind of fun.
