Joining USMMA Parents Page of 2016.

I would like to add to my original post the following: The page on Facebook for Class of 2016 was created for Parents of Plebe Candidates/Appointees only, not the actual Plebes Candidates/Appointees. This is not an official page managed by USMMA, but simply created by a couple of parents who felt it was a good idea to gather documents and information needed by families to be able to handle the first few months upon acceptance, but also to follow along the 4 years, in order to support each other through good and bad times. We do not mean to keep any information secretive, neither are we trying to refuse entrance indiscriminately. We believe only parents can actually benefit from the information gathered. We incite the new Plebes-to-be to create an account for their parents in order to allow for the information to be scattered amidst family members, but managed by the parents themselves. We do not believe that parents would feel as at ease to disclose their thoughts, concerns or opinions on this page, if scrutinized or observed by Plebes Candidates. As a matter of fact, I think it would be a really good idea for the new Plebe Candidates for Class of 2016 to gather and create their own FB page right now, before Indoc, so as to exchange information, opinions, fear, facts.....and I think that page should be absolutely close shut to parents!! ~ Finally, I would like for all Plebes not to feel rejected in any way, as we are all a big family at USMMA, and are extremely proud of all of you, but above all, we are truly looking forward meeting you all comes July 5th.

Dear 2016 Parents and 2016 Candidates-
If you have not done so yet, you will want to join your PARENT 2016 fb page. It is a closed group. You will have to ask to join and once confirmed, will be added. 2016 parents are already chatting and asking lots of great ?'s. They are sharing information and there will be thousands of pictures posted during INDOC as well. There are already many valuable documents about shopping hints for INDOC, taxi info, hotel info, sports info, Parents Assoc. picnic links, All Academy Ball links, Birthday Cake information, Info about Wisdom Teeth, Dental X Rays, the Logging In Book, links to Spirit Wear-to purchase shirts and sweatshirts, ETC ETC- *The parent fb group will become a wonderful and positive support group that you will enjoy and cherish as the year progresses. Many parents that join have never done fb before and THAT IS FINE- no big deal!-- you will DEFINITELY want to join your parent fb group! No ? is too big or too small. And you won't be made fun of for asking a simple ? as well... it's a "safe place" for concerned and supportive parents of current USMMA students. We look forward to meeting you. Parents of incoming Plebe Candidates, Class of 2016. A clarification is in order. The creation of a Facebook page has never been intended to “replace” this forum. The intent of it was to add a “face” to the name and “handle” of a person, so as to encourage friendships, a support system in the same geographical area, and a “venting” platform when needed. During Indoc it was nice to meet some of those same faces who had become familiar, and although it still felt awful to watch your kid disappear behind those doors, at least some of the faces around you seemed "known." We have accepted other family members as well as the parents of the candidates, so they could follow closely the progress of their favorite nephew or niece, their cousin, their brother or sister who by leaving home, have also left behind siblings who miss them greatly. Many times having a good connection with families who live close to the Academy may help when students live too far and need a friend or a contact near the academy, who can reach out and help during the holidays or short breaks. This forum and a Facebook page are two different sources of information entirely. I strongly encourage any incoming parent to stay on this forum, consult it, gather information, listen to the opinions of the people who have been there and more often as alumni have lived through it, because their opinions are straight forward and unbiased, then join the Facebook page to meet and greet other incoming parents and their families. After all, from the little we have learned about the Academy, we understand KP is all about team work, companies, battalions, camaraderie, help and support each other, and we think our families should all learn the same as our kids. The big picture in fact is that all of us, whether on this forum or Facebook, want what is best for our kids, we want to learn as much as possible so not remain in the dark, feel isolated and ignorant about all the changes and improvements that happen daily at KP. I for one am thankful of what I have learned consulting this forum. Thank you~

As a parent, I appreciate the value of both. I have been an avid reader of the SAF for the past year & 1/2, although not really a participant. The advice has been very helpful and when strong viewpoints have been discussed, I felt I was also being trained in the government/maritime culture.:shake:

Ok, so maybe I am the last remaining soul to not get into Facebook. Just not too interested in having one more thing to monitor. Likely, I am missing out on all sorts of info...

Does anyone know where to find information on Parent's Weekend at the academy? Do I need tickets for anything? How do I get them? Costs? What events are "must do", and which ones aren't? Any advice would be awsome. Thanks in advance

Most of the information can be found on the national parents association page. The page for parent's weekend is http://www.usmmaaf.com/s/1175/index.aspx?sid=1175&gid=1&pgid=520

I hope this helps

It is a good idea to book your hotel now for Parents Weekend. There is a listing of hotels on the Parents Association website.

If it is your first trip to the academy ( like it was mine ) make sure you are there for colors at 7am ( verify the time ) on Friday morning. Bring tissues the pollen there can be a bear

answer- try the school web sight. yes you need tickets. the packet will be mailed to you. you "must do" everything you can.... be on campus for the colors (approx 7 am), attend everything, see the Beat Retreat, go to class(es) with your child, attend the football game, know where to "go" after the game so that you get to pin the wings on your DS, etc etc. Advice? Join your parent facebook group!!! Gosh, this info has already been talked about over and over and over! The people answering all of your ?'s here are ALSO on their parent facebook group(s). The Forum IS a good source of info...and will give you a different perspective on broader issues... but it will not replace the info that is shared on the fb group... fb group for parents is your unbilicle cord to the Academy. My dh (dear husband) was the same way and absolutely refused to join fb... until he actually gave in, and is 100% glad that he did. And no, he rarely gets on to "chat" and have conversations- he just doesn't have time- but he understands the value of the information shared in one venue vs another venue.

Just FYI: Most listed hotels on Parent Page are not offering the discounted rates. Most families are using Expedia,Kayak etc. to find good rates. Many different hotels are being used up to 30-40 min. away. Definitely book room ASAP seems more expensive than it was during Indoc.

Plebe candidate parents who are going to Parents Weekend. My wife and I are flying in for the weekend....and really looking forward to seeing our son. Looks as though Saturday after the football game we will be able to head off campus with our son for a few hours. ANYONE HAVE ANY FUN IDEAS OF THINGS TO DO THAT EVENING? WE ARE NOT TOO FAMILIAR WITH NYC... BUT WANT TO MAXIMIZE OUR TIME WITH HIM. ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE APRRECIATED.

One the main Merchant Marine page (shows all the postings) is a sticky thread at the top called "Out and About on Long Island" which has a great list of what you can do on Long Island.

Let your mid dictate the weekend.

We went out for a nice dinner after the football game and had purposely scheduled a late dinner reservation ~35 min out of Great Neck. We didn't want to have to be stressed to miss our reservation (2009's football game against Coast Guard went into overtime). We wanted time to go back to our hotel and change. (We also needed to get out of our rain-soaked clothes.) We wanted to go to a quiet restaurant where we could talk and our DS wouldn't have to worry about running into upperclassmen. We went to the Rothmann's restaurant. The meal was awesome and the atmosphere exactly what we wanted.

I had arranged a late check out time for Sunday expecting our mid to sleep in. Imagine our surprise when at Saturday night's dinner he mentioned that he wanted to go into NYC by LIRR and get his bearings since he had never been there before and would be taking the LIRR and Amtrak home.

Several years ago, there were some great threads with lots of ideas and restaurant suggestions. A quick search may give you some info.

Have a GREAT weekend!

Ours is a 2013 as well, and in 2009 we opted for a restaurant in Port Washington after the game and then went back to our hotel. Son was tired.:wink: The next day, Band Company had to perform at an event in Battery Park (400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage), so we had to get son back on campus at 0630. We then took the train into Manhattan, went to Band Company's performance, and then took son to brunch at a restaurant in Times Square. Went to a special exhibit in Midtown (we live only 2 hours north of the City, so son already had seen the city), then back to Great Neck to pick up our car and go home. I'm afraid we won't be down this weekend - son has an off-campus cross country meet, so he's not around. However, hope everyone has a great weekend - Go Mariners!:thumb:
