Not sure what the program is this year. DS was CGAS at MMI 2012-2013. I can say that appointment is not a lock for just completing the program at MMI. IIRC they had to maintain a 3.0 GPA. 2.99 did not cut it. A few were DOR while there. One did not make it due to a visual impairment not caught at MEPS. I don't remember any cut due to behavior issues. A close call though. If they successfully completed they were bound to accept the appointment. Perhaps your term "placeholder" is a little strong. They take the same classes they would if at SA. They are expected to maintain GPA, improve SAT, be involved athletically.
In the chart above it looks like 100% of self-preps for CGA get appointments. DORs may not be included. Perhaps PM with Physicsguru could get you complete data.
I only remember 2 of the self-preps from his MMI class graduating from CGA. However, I think there were more that did. Getting the appointment is just the first step. Graduating is the goal.
