The 2017 Logging In Book mentions two events for parents on Dropoff Day: "Short briefing by Supe and staff", and "Mess Muster and Supe's message to 2017."

Are these events "not to be missed", as in, changing outbound flights so that we can attend them?

As I understand it, once we drop our guy off at 7:30, that's it.......no more hugs, pictures, etc.

If you can arrange a later flight, I think it's worth it. No, once you give your mid a hug before he/she enters O'Hara Hall you won't get any additional chances for hugs and photos are by luck only. (Once they get to lunch muster they all look the same and it's hard to tell which one is yours.:shake: ) However, the briefing is good for parents - good information and very reassuring. As for the mess muster, you will have the opportunity to see all the mids, arranged in company and in workout gear, and listen to the superintendent's message to them.

It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since we dropped DS off for Indoc. Our visits to the campus have been few (I think our fifth visit will be graduation weekend:thumb:), but Indoc was worth it.
 
I agree that they are worthwhile events IF you can change your reservations without financial or other hardship. If you miss them they aren't "defining" moments in your KP experience; however, they are nice.
 
The Lunch Muster is great to see however, if you cannot stay, within hours, videos and pics will be available on You Tube and the Facebook pages. We spent all last summer searching for a glimpse of our DS in pictures or videos. The families and Mids do a great job supplying new parents with photos.

My first time at USMMA was to drop off my DS. It was such a wonderful bonding experience with other parents at the parent assoc. tents. Getting my calendars (super important for planning flights home), knickknacks, making friends & having a lot of good conversations. The Supe's talk was good-felt soo much better leaving him 3000 miles from home) Chatted with a lot of m/n while kids were in dealing with forms, being shaved & fitted out. It was fun trying to spot my DS doing the squared running route (We gave him a bright kelly green shirt to wear-success!) There must have been a couple of a hundred parents who stayed for the lunch muster-Supe was hysterical! If possible, stay-you will definitely feel left out if you have to leave.
 
Alot depends on your own personal preference. When you drop your candidate off at 7:30, it usually takes 30 mins or so for the line they are on to work it's way into O'hara hall for processing. FYI, several moms ran up to the line for one last hug, just before they entered O'Hara. Then for most, the wait at the barricades begin where you hope to catch your first glimpse of your candidate experiencing day zero...jogging with two handfuls of stuff and being yelled at by instructors. It takes about another 30-45 minutes before this happens. By now it's nearly 9 and you will need time (and money!) to meet the parent associations, visit the Nex, and perhaps open an account for your DS at the NEFCU. I strongly suggest you take the time to this then if at all possible. The lunch muster forms up at 11:45. Here you will hope to catch a last live glimpse, before they march into Delano, after listening to a nice address by the commandant.

As a non military family, we were very impressed by the whole affair, and would highly recommend it. IMHO I echo sentiments of the prior posters and would do all I can to stay the extra 2-3 hours until they march off. At 1300 the campus closes to all civilians.
 
It's been suggested to have your ds or dd in a shirt which is easily recognizable to you, but not to draw attention to your PC. Wish we knew that in 2009~ man, these last three years have flown by, not the first year, for sure....not the first.
