Parents Weekend

There used to be no Thanksgiving break, as my DH has reminded me, which is why the holiday carols were appropriate. This, of course, was Back In The Day of Saturday classes, no spring break and other bragging right deprivations and it-was-tough-in-my-day traditions.
We had regular classes on the day after Thanksgiving (Friday)

I seem to recall that A-N was on Thanksgiving, or maybe the weekend of Thanksgiving "way back in the day" --before my time.

At the conclusion of PPW last year, while saying our last goodbyes by the submarine monument, Xmas carols were blaring from a nearby corner window in Bancroft. DS was being welcomed back ‘home’ by name by faceless detailers on the second floor which brought a wry smile to DS’s face and a teary look from my DW. He gave us a hug and said, ‘time to lock in...see you at Christmas’. Since we live nearly 5,000 miles from Annapolis, it was indeed a long 4+ months and made for a somber car ride to dinner that night.

The end of PPW was a turning point in realizing DS was now independent (as well it should be) and is more than capable of navigating all that USNA and life brings. Now, as he prepares to return to the Yard for reform in a week or so, it is wonderful to witness the growth, maturity, and confidence that he now has.

I suspect this next goodbye, although tough, will not have the same ‘sting’ as PPW as he and we (his parents) are in a different/more settled place—confident in the process and looking forward to Youngster year. I’m sure our parting words at the airport will be, ‘love you, stay close to the Lord, and see you at Christmas...’ but the car ride home will filled with pride and joy.

Army/Navy game used to be played on Thanksgiving weekend Saturday at one point.
