Hi all, I know this may not be the right area for this, but I just wanted to put It here anyway since this forum sees a lot of activity.

So I'm currently a sophomore enrolled in AFROTC and I have to decide within the next few weeks (for my personal reasons) whether I want to stick with the program or try something new. I enjoy the rotc program, but in the past year I've been flying part 61 and I really really enjoy it. So much so that I'm thinking of transferring schools to an aviation school and dropping AFROTC. Does anyone know what kind of a possibility it would be to do 4 years at an aviation school and then apply to the guard or OTS? Or even Army woft? Yes, I know that if I still went the Air Force route I would need a waiver to commission since I dropped ROTC.

Thank you all.

WAIT!!!
First off I am a senior in AFJROTC...... that means nothing. However there is a flight school scholarship available to you and AFJROTC students. ask your commanding officer about it. I had the pleasure of earning that scholarship and earning my private pilots license..... all paid for by uncle sam. It is a 8 week course and it is Part 141. I recommend 141 because it is less time consuming and you can pick the pace at which your skills allow you to. (I soloed at 8 hours!!). But before you drop out just know plenty of AFROTC college kids were in the same program. Hope this helps

My school has a 141 program since I am at one of the big name "aviation schools". It is miserable in the aviation program. I got my private through a 61 and wouldn't trade it for anything else. My roommate hasn't soloed at 30 hours since he is a flight student here... these 141 schools will milk you dry. If I were you, I'd stick with AFROTC, get an EA, do well, and head off to UPT instead of sinking a painful amount of money into one of the big flight programs.

Others may have had better experiences, but I'd stick with AFROTC. Part 141 can beat the fun out of flying. I will never trade my Part 61 experience for anything else... the "aviation schools" are soul destroying.

Yes, it is possible to attend a Part 141 4 year university that has an Aeronautical Science with Flight or like named degree program, graduate with a Bachelor of Science and your certs: PPL, Instrument, Commercial, CFI/CFII and the multi engine one too, multi-engine licenses toward your ATP, and go the OTS, OCS as a path to commission and serve as an officer after graduating. My son's buddy dropped NROTC- MO and now is a junior in a part 141 program, going the OCS Marine Corps path while earning his aviation commercial license- over the last 2 two summers he completed OCS Marine Corps training and plans to serve as an 2nd Lt. officer after completing college and his training. post any specific questions and I'll try to get you answers from him if you like.

Unlike AFROTC, Marines and Army have "guaranteed aviation" contracts so long as you meet all requirements and pass the military flight physical. So maybe you could explore those paths if thy boateth floateth about flying. also confirm the aircraft fleet and options of flying fixed v rotating wing, jets, heavies, etc. Make sure you understand the cost of a 141 flight program's fees. It, well, it ain't cheap and if it works out you could get a path to fly through the military without those costs. If you just have to fly though, then do what you have to do. How strong is your desire to fly vs serve vs both?

For Army Warrant officer - just be aware that commissioned officers outrank warrant officers when standing shoulder to shoulder after OCS/ WO candidate school and their respective flight training. requirements for experience for flight warrant officers are different than any other WO path - all the other paths require prior service.

Please work with your cadre about how they code you out of AFROTC to ensure it supports you moving forward with a military career. Are you on-track to be selected for field training? I would discuss options and ask for the support of your chain of command to end on good terms with AFROTC if that is what you choose to do. I would also consider finishing ROTC if you're on track to continue - bird in hand and all that

Good luck to you.

This was really helpful thank you. To be honest, field training is looking 50/50 right now. It’s a really tough year. I already know my commander wouldn’t have an issue keeping me as an AS500 but I’d rather not repeat FTP year and have to compete with a new class of which much more want pilot slots than my current one. The flight school im going to now has a really good cost effective part 141 four year program that would transfer to as a backup, and after I get my degree there I would love to apply to WOFT, OTS, or Air national guard. This is a pretty looming decision on the horizon so I really appreciate all the insight I can get.
