My son's passport is almost expired..would it be beneficial for him to renew it now before he enters or is he required to have a military issued one if he has an opportunity to travel abroad at the Academy?

Our son's appointment packet had an information sheet in it suggesting that it is a good idea to come to the Academy with a current passport. I haven't heard anything about cadets being issued a military passport. There was also a 'passport night' soon after classes started during our son's doolie year where any cadets who did not have a passport could apply for one. My information is from two years ago, so if anyone has more current info, please post it.

if you need a passport for militray reason, you will be issued it. i don't know of any cadets with them, but the midshipmen in glee club were getting them when i was there because they had a group trip to Argentina this past spring break

that being said, you want to have a civilian passport for personal use. unless your travel requires a military passport, you'll want a personal one. they have opportunities here to get passports (that's what i did) but if you have the opportunity to take care of it before you get here, you may as well. plus then you can get a picture that somewhat looks like you (maybe) as opposed to when where your hair is starting to grow back but hasn't yet... lol

I'm going to be going to West Point in June, but I just submitted everything to get renewed today. (The last time i had it current was over a decade ago)

I personally think it is a really good idea to have it current, as it will be one less thing to worry about later on.

Renew it! Less hassle now than while here! I really wish USAFA would follow along with USNA and USMA on also issuing a military passport. I only have my personal one, but I can no longer travel to any Arab countries because of the nice little Israel stamp that's in mine now.
