My son was appointed in January and is an active duty enlisted soldier. He believes that he will PCS ( will some leave en route) to USMA and report 30 June. No break in service— simply transition from current status to Cadet. A friend’s son has been appointed and is also an active duty soldier. He has indicated that he will ETS sometime before 1 July. I suppose each might be correct if their contracts of enlistments differ accordingly, but does an enlisted person with more than one year of obligated service remaining after 1 July seperate (ETS) or change stations (PCS) ?

He will PCS there. Also, if you don't mind my asking, what are his stats? I'm also an enlisted soldier applying for 2024 and am trying to get a frame a reference of what it takes to get a direct appointment. Thanks and congrats on his appointment.

Thanks for your response. Good luck on your quest! If by stats you mean academics he had about equal A and B grades, mid 1300s SAT, and lots of athletics and other outside activities. His military time has been short but very active. His command has been very supportive. In fact, I think he would credit them with making this all possible. His family (many of us with military experience) are quiet proud of him — as I know yours will be for you!

Yes, he will PCS. If he were admitted to USMAPS, his year of study would count towards his time in service, and he would continue to receive pay at his current enlisted grade. However, since he was appointed, he will immediately begin West Point this Summer as a plebe with cadet pay. What will happen is when he does PCS, his contract will essentially pause. If he does not make it to the Affirmation Oath at the beginning of his junior year, or otherwise fails to graduate from USMA, his enlisted contract will be reinstated and he will be required to fulfill the remaining service obligation. Congratulations to your son, and good luck throughout the process!
