PE SOE Confusion

I am working on my SOEs right now and I'm confused on who will be the best person to fill out my PE SOE. I have never taken an actual physical education class in high school because of my participation in football and track and I am aware that a coach cannot submit the PE SOE. My MALO/FFR advised me to "pick someone who can evaluate you for your athleticism and physical fitness" but the people I work with the most in regards to exercise have been my head football coach who also teaches a "Weight Training" class at my high school for the football players where we lift weights and where he is technically my teacher and not my coach but I am afraid that won't count because he is in fact my football coach as well. Other than him, I have a good relationship with my schools assistant athletic director who I am leaning towards or I have read on this forum that some candidates used their school's athletic trainers? I did not expect this SOE to be so complicated but hopefully I can get some advice.

Who said a coach couldn’t do it? My cross country coach did mine, and it was all good.

In my applications instructions booklet on my candidate portal it says in bold capital letters coaches CANNOT submit the PE SOE so that's interesting I don't know whether they changed it or not.

Have you taken your CFA yet? If you get someone besides your coach to administer it the CFA could also do the SOE seeing that they got to watch you perform physically? Just a thought.

I have not performed my official CFA yet and I was thinking of having the trainer that I work with at a private gym within my city administer it but I don't think he can because my CFA packet says PE teacher amongst other people which do not include anybody outside of my school.

My son asked his Lifetime Wellness/Health teacher to do it. It was accepted.

I had my coach do it. My sport participation gives me PE credit so my coach was technically a PE teacher

My sport participation does that as well so I am wondering whether I can validate my coach as being a PE teacher like you did. Thanks for the info.

I’d suggest your CFA administrator so as to not have any question. If you are in good physical condition, it won’t be an issue. The HS PE teacher administered my DS’s and wrote the SOE. My DS hadn’t interacted with that individual except in passing in the halls. It turned out just fine.

Who makes most sense to give you a PE SOE?
Then confirm it with your FFR and admissions officer.
Many are in the same boat as you - no dedicated PE teacher that is the obvious choice, and you have a "hybrid" teacher/coach that acts in more than one capacity. My DD took JROTC as PE, so it was the most logical choice to have her JROTC instructor give her PE SOE, which was accepted by USMA. And again, he was giving the PE SOE in his capacity as her PE credit teacher.

They changed it this year. Here's the order of precedence they have for PE SOE:
  • PE Teacher (Can include JROTC military instructor)
  • Health Teacher
  • CFA Administrator
  • Athletic Director

When all else fails, follow instructions. You might know your coach well and want them to proctor-they cannot. You may not take PE this year.
The purpose of the proctor is to observe and record while strictly following the rules. They do not need to have a relationship with you to do that.

Our DS hadn't taken PE since 9th grade and didn't play school sports. He set up a meeting with his 9th grade PE teacher, brought her a copy of the rules and instructions for the CFA and they scheduled a time to have her proctor it. First one wasn't what he thought was his best, but he submitted it. Then, after more training, he requested his admissions counselor at USNA to set up a second attempt. She cleared his scores, PE teacher proctored it again and then she resubmitted the improved scores.

Also, just as a side note, USMA didn't allow 2nd attempt for 2024 cycle, so he emailed his results informally to his FFO and they said all was good except mile, to train and submit only once. Make sure you are careful about that with whatever this admission cycle has for policy.
