Hello,

I am graduating high school in about a month (class of 2021), and still am pending a waiver for USNA due to a non-anaphylactic peanut allergy. I have a final exam in about a week for an ingestion and skin test, and am curious if anyone has any knowledge regarding this area. I have already committed to a civillian school, and NROTC dates are around the corner, so I want to get a good idea of the likelihood that I am granted a waiver for my allergy. Everyone I have asked has told me that there is no way to be sure until they review my profile, but does anyone know the amount of peanut allergy waivers given, how to prepare for the ingestion challenge, etc.?

I was granted a waiver for a peanut allergy this year. Every case is unique and different, but I’ll give you on how mine went. I was DQ’d for only a peanut allergy as well. I had only one reaction when I was an infant, developing only 2 hives around my eyes. I avoided peanuts for about 10 years when I accidentally ingested them during a party. No reaction followed and have freely ate them since. I had to complete an ingestion challenge. They started with a single nut, then went up exponentially until the last step was about 15 peanuts. They weighed each step to get to a certain weight. There is really nothing you can do to prepare. The whole purpose of it is to see whether or not your allergy would inhibit your ability to serve. Again, I cannot stress enough that every case is unique and different. This is my situation.

I heard that USNA cooks with peanut oil. They do have a jar of peanut butter at every table.
