Peanut Oral Challenge

Hi all,

I was wondering about the oral food challenge that I would need in order to show that I can consume peanuts without a reaction. I’m currently looking into oral immunotherapy options (writing this at my allergists’ office :) ) and I just wanted to know the amount of peanuts (grams) I need to be able to eat in order to pass the test. My IGE level is very low (0.71) and I’ve never had a reaction before, so I’m hoping that the immunotherapy will be an option, but my doctor just wanted to know about the amount of peanuts I’ll need to consume so that she can find the right dose and medication for me. Thanks in advance!

Immunotherapy is treatment. If treatment is required once contracted in the services, whatever therapies are required for good health will be prescribed.

If you have been DQd by DoDMERB, and have been asked for an oral food challenge by a waiver authority, they will determine "acceptability" through their own waiver protocols and subjective decision making. :wiggle:

I'm not a doctor, but I went through the oral challenge for peanuts so I have some insight into this.

When I underwent the challenge, I was told to eat one whole serving of peanuts (1oz/28g/39 pieces) divided into three 10-minute intervals.
After eating a single serving size with no reaction, they wrote up a report and sent me on my way. I later sent this report to DoDMERB.

Again, not a doctor, but just my two cents.

I did oral immunotherapy (OIT) for my peanut allergy. My IGE levels were very high, but I never had a reaction. OIT took about 6 months to complete, but I then passed an oral challenge when my DQ came.

Did you end up receiving a waiver after passing the oral challenge?

Just wanted to give you a heads up: I was recently contacted by DoDMERB for a remedial. I will update you if/when I get the waiver.

Hey! I'm (sort of) going through this process now. I completed OIT for my peanut allergy and passed a 20g food challenge back in February knowing that it would help my case for a waiver. When they asked you for the 28g challenge, had you already conducted a food challenge, or was that your first? I'm just curious if they might ask me to do another one since what I did is lower.

I looked it up, 20g is about 24 peanuts. That's the number my son ate for his oral challenge which got him his waiver for NROTC.

Thank you for taking the time to check! They actually waivered the allergy on Thursday without asking for another challenge!!! :)
