Pending Waiver Submission/Review by USNA?

Typical time frame is 4 weeks to 4 months. The process takes a while. If your file was submitted for waiver review March 14, a response would not be expected for the next week or so, at a minimum.

Hello, Our DS waiver request/review was put in on March 24th. Is there any chance of the waiver being granted by tomorrow April 15th? Our understanding is this is a hard deadline for waivers and if not granted, our DS is out of luck until next year. Is this your understanding also? Thanks and GOD BLESS

My understanding is that if you meet the other 3 criteria (Nomination, physical testing and get accepted into the college) a waiver will be generated. We have been pending waiver review/submission for my DS since November. Updated all medical information to be ready for waiver request. Still waiting though...

Sorry for the delay, I had been on vacation the last week. How did the waivers work out?

Hello everyone,
As most folks were at one time, I'm new here. Long time lurker, seldom poster.
My question for anyone that may know. My DS won a 4year AROTC scholarship after the 2nd board and was accepted at NCSU. Even visited the campus / program twice. All went well until his DoDMERB 4/20/17, where he failed for D155.80, astigmatism >3.00 diopters. His is ~4.75. His portal status has been "Pending Waiver Submission/Review" since. He has contacted the ROO at NCSU via email and someone at Cadet Command as well. He's even had his JROTC instructor contact the ROO. No answer from anyone about what we should do. We don't know if they need more paperwork, another exam, etc...Waiting is all we know to do at this point. If waiting is what we have to do then fine. But I'd hate to be wasting time if there's something they need we are unaware of.

I should add we (his parents) have totally left the college stuff up to him. He's been accepted to both universities he applied to and the ROTC scholarship without us reviewing even one question, essay, or application. We have deliberately stayed out of it so we can be sure this is what he not us, wants. Until now we have done nothing but I'm afraid we have a smart 18-year old about to get a hard lesson in real world bureaucracy. Any help any one could offer would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Waivers take between 4 weeks and 4 months, depending on complexity and backlog. Typically after the DoDMERB exam, if there is an issue, some sort of remedial is requested. Either for more information or for additional testing. The DoDMERB website has some good flow charts on the process. If your DS is already in a ROTC unit they should always work through their chain of command. If DS is an incoming freshman, Check with their DoDMERB technician to make sure that they have all the required documentation. But, it does seem like it is just a matter of waiting since the package has been forwarded to the waiver authority for their review and disposition.

Do you agree with the medical determination of astigmatism >3.00 diopters? If that is not correct, you will want to get medical information to DoDMERB so it can be added to his package. This is typically done during the remedial process, prior to waiver review. Also, supplying supplemental information prior to a final waiver determination is best. Disputing or changing a waiver denial is extremely difficult, if not impossible. I have yet to see anyone post a medical waiver denial appeals process.

We also have a 18yr old on a 4yr award to NCSU in the exact same status for a back injury from middle school. We have been a little more involved in providing guidance since I'm an Army officer veteran myself. I did call DoDMERB and they stated 4-6 weeks from the DQ which was on 11 July. She did give me a contact at Cadet Command and phone number but no answer and have tried for weeks. Our son is going to the ROTC conditioning and we have taken care of the financial ends for what we need to for this semester. NCSU ROTC contact stated there is nothing to do but wait.
We did submit the additional medical information as requested through DodMERB but did not know about sending coach letters, etc. Our son did write a personal statement which included no physical limitations given he played football all 4 years in HS and is training/working out currently. Going through this thread, in hindsight we did not add that he was 1st string safety all 4yrs (to add to his physical ability) but not sure if we can add anything now.

Hello,
I am hoping you can provide any guidance given your role within recruiting and if there is anything more we can do aside from wait?
Our son was awarded a 4yr through Army ROTC at NCSU and current status is pending waiver review after the DoDMERB official DQ. We have been " R250.50 Pending waiver review by AROTC" since 13 June. I have a feeling they have to be really busy this time of year with so many starting college in the next few weeks.

Went to NCSU orientation on 7/13. We all took the opportunity to check in with the ROO since we were there. Explained the situation and was basically told it's a case of "hurry up & wait". DS portal does indicate the 2nd eye exam has been received by Cadet Command but status has not changed. We've covered his expenses for this semester but obviously anxious about the situation.
To add further anxiety DS was denied virtually all other local & regional scholarships he applied for because he already had the "big" scholarship. He was told point blank by the HS principle she couldn't recommend for anything else because of the AROTC scholarship. In all he was eliminated from a $1500, a $10000, and a $5000 -$13000 annual scholarship because he didn't need it. So...now I have a 18year old who went through HS with 1 "B" and the rest "A's", 2 varsity sport team captain, JROTC battalion commander, Eagle Scout who has a grand scholarship total of $1350. I'm a little bitter about the whole scholarship process.

You can continue to add documents/letters/exams to the file by sending them to DoDMERB. They will be reviewed there and then sent on to the waiver authority.

Thank you-we just received the following this morning on DoDMERB:
R221.08

Consult with an orthopedic surgeon concerning current or history of XXX. Please evaluate to see if applicant is released to full unrestricted activity.

so hopeful it's not over yet:)

We were at the same orientation but didn't get a chance to check in with the ROO on that Friday. We have done the same re: expenses. Hoping the upcoming response to the remedial code we just got today on DoDMERB will get him through this last hurdle.
