Pennsylvania Nominations

Oh, @cdthompso1 , you are going to put me on the naughty list for dragging you down the bunny hole.

My understanding (others, please jump in and correct if I get this wrong) is that a "Competitive" nom means that the MOC submits an unranked list (up to 15) and allows the SA to pick.

Other MOCs will rank the candidates. So, if you are a "Principal" nominee, that means you are ranked at the top of the list by the MOC. There are variations of Principal where they also rank the remaining 15 nominees. Here is the bunny hole: https://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/nominations-faq.33450/
Thanks for the clarity. I thought afterward maybe you meant competitive slate, i.e. 15 unranked noms, and yes, I've seen no indication otherwise for any congressional offices in PA, but admittedly with no insider knowledge. And @Screen199, thanks for bringing that 300 statewide candidate number to the discussion. PA is a big state with deep military connections, and that seems plausible, given about 140K high school graduates per year. To be honest, I was somewhat surprised my DD got a senate nom to regionally popular USNA. The superhero caliber stats people post on this forum are intimidating, and I figured some decent percentage of those must be in PA, sweeping up those statewide noms.

I went down the bunny hole. So each MOC can select how many nominations per slot. I thought 5 but I guess it’s 15?

Apples, oranges and cranberries here.

At each of the DoD SAs, each MOC can have 5 cadets or midshipmen charged to them, usually spread across 4 years. That usually means 1 appointment slot is available to be charged to the MOC in that class; some years, 2 appointment slots are available. It all depends how many slots opened up upon graduation of the most recent class.

For each slot to be filled in a given admissions cycle, the MOC can submit a slate (list) of up to 15 nominees. One of the fully qualified (as evaluated by the SA) nominees on that slate will be offered the appointment charged to the MOC.

A critical fact is the SA can also offer appointments to other fully qualified nominees on that slate and charge them to other nom authorities they manage.

Go read the pinned post at the top of the Nominations forum.

My understanding is that each MOC can nominate "up to" 15 (used to be 10 before this year) for each open slot at each academy. Each MOC can have 5 nominees attending each academy at any point in time, so since these are 4 year schools, some years they will have more than 1 slot open and can theoretically nominate up to 30. Also some of those nominated and charged to the MOC will drop out or will choose not report at the last minute.

Note that only 1 of the 15 nominees will actually attend the Academy and be charged to the MOC. The other 14 might be moved to the National Waiting List and hope to get an appointment from there.

I got a call from our congressman's office that the congressman will be calling my son on Dec. 23, they wanted to make sure he would be available to take the call. He has a Casey USNA nomination, our congressional district is rural, and he usually gives kids nominations to multiple academies, the Casey nomination was a bonus as I'd heard PA was pretty competitive, although my son came out of that interview feeling confident.

Same here! My kid, I think, is an extremely well rounded (whole person) candidate, there are certainly many people with higher test scores, athletic achievements, grades and class rank. He has some unique things in his resume, and a few really stellar leadership positions, but I was worried!

@NY1234 and @Bam95, do you mind sharing which congressional districts?

We got the same call and our district is the same demographic, so we might be close. I don't want to share to much yet, since it is still not officially public yet, but hard to believe. Hard to keep that a secret too. My son got a letter from Casey last night for Merchant Marine. It is currently his 2nd choice behind USNA, so we're hoping that the next one will cover that.

I'm seeing on the FB page (Parents of Military Academy Applicants) that Fetterman nominations are out. Anybody on this forum receive an email/call/nom?

I know two kids who got a call last night from him. (At 7 pm) Bit worried now since I haven't heard anything yet.

I have a close friend who got a nomination from fetterman, I got one from Casey so I don’t think a fetterman nom is in the cards for me lol. Anyone know when rejection emails come?

Haven't heard anything here either way. We never heard anything from Casey until the letter showed up a week after others on here had received a call, so still optimistic.

Got a Casey nom. Got a congressional nom, not holding our breath on Fetterman. Do the senators talk? Someone on the facebook group got noms from both Casey and Fetterman

I'm wondering the same. The poster on the FP page isn't saying if both Senatorial Noms were for the same or different academies.

Casey nom has been received, and hoping Congressional Rep releases nominations tomorrow as she has done in prior years.

Portal changed yesterday from Pending to CPR. Waiting.....and waiting....and waiting.....and praying......
