Permit to Report

I accepted my appointment early last week but my candidate status page has not been changed... Do I have to get my police background checks in first?

No, you don't have to have your police record report in for your status to change. If you mailed the acceptance, you have to allow time for it to get to USNA. Once it does, it usually is 24-48 hours after receipt that you may see a change.

Last year, our letter from the Dean of Admissions informing us of our Plebe-to-be's address was dated June 14th, 2010. I-Day was July 1st.

Last year, DS status never changed--I was worried they didn't get his acceptance, but the PTR still arrived, so I figured they knew he accepted.

PTR arrived today

BFE #2 has arrived! Wow, lots of paperwork. Guess he's gonna be busy!

PTR and email for academic background/math placement exam arrived in the last two days......DS will be busy for a while

Just sent in my acceptance today! Still have to go to the police station though!

Just wanted to concur with Positive Thinking's recommendation to get a passport now. They might need one for their first summer training and I am told it can be more complicated for a mid to do this from Annapolis, especially as they will not have a car. In the past several years, many passport offices have been closed or consolidated and we had to drive to another county to turn in our applications. Also, these offices are generally only open M-F during normal business hours. Another factor that makes it more difficult for a mid to take care of this during the academic year.

Also, if your mid already has a passport, make sure the expiration date gets them through all four years at the Academy, if possible. Since my son's passport was gotten prior to age 18, it only lasted for 5 years and was going to expire within a year of getting to the Academy. Since he had turned 18, we went ahead and applied for a new one good for 10 years.

They won't need to take the passport with them to I-Day. My son took his back with him when he was home on Spring Break in case it is needed this summer.

Kind of like wisdom teeth, it is not essential to get it done prior to I-Day, but if you can, it is one less thing to worry about getting done in the future when it may be more disruptive.

Concur on the passport...and they let my son keep all his teeth! :thumb:

I'm laughing as I remember my son getting that math test that he had to complete before I-Day....His response: "Are you kidding? I thought I was done with school until August." :yllol:

DS dove into the math test! Now if it had been an essay...:frown:

MoM, can you elaborate on the teeth? We're trying to decide about the wisdom teeth, since DS hasn't had any issues at all. Dentist, of course "recommends" extraction.

Also just realized there is no "Dental" form in PTR, even though it is listed as a form in the booklet (but not on the checklist!) and the link for "Dental" doesn't work on CIS. Did anyone receive a "Dental" form?

Pull 'em

Our dentist -- who has a mortgage and boat payments, like plenty of dentists -- said h.s. senior DS's wisdom teeth were fine. No problem. Look @ the x-rays! No action needed. So we sent son to NAPS, confident in the knowledge that his teeth were as fine as the rest of his fitness.

In months, USN dentists said wisdom teeth had to come out. Immediately! And wimpy mother gets this news 3,000 miles away.

Navy dentists yanked out all four of them. Heavily medicated son called soon after the procedure, sounding alarmingly like Leon Redbone -- w/ NAPS friends shrieking w/ laughter in the background -- to say he was fine. Friends brought him soup, took care of him, teachers gave him a break on deadlines, Navy follow-up was great, DS healed quickly and thoroughly.

Mother (reminder: 3,000 miles away) upped hair-coloring appts from every 6 wks to every 4 wks.

Moral to mothers: if you have any reason, ANY REASON, to think your kid needs to have dental procedures prior to USNA (or NAPS), do it. Not for your kid. For yourself!

WTM--There was no dental form in last years PTR either (at least not in my son's packet)
He did have his wisdom teeth pulled in January of his senior year of HS though.

Yank 'em out now. As for the math tests, those are apparently to get a feel for how a Plebe will be placed for first semester calculus. Plebes will take math, chemistry and I think english validation tests within the first week or 10 days of Plebe summer (before they get too worn down) to help with the placement process.

What is the Math test e-mail? Received the education background one, but none for a math test.

If the Education background you are talking about is the Candidate Academic Background Systems that was e-mailed then it is part of the forms they have to fill out...it is not a separate e-mail. Once you log in you will find it.

NCM & Fishbowl, trouble is convincing DS to yank 'em now!

He took a math placement test online, then he took Calculus I validation online. The email had a link to the questions for each academic department, and under the math exam section, there was an explanation about the placement & validation exams.

How many questions are on each math test? I know there are 10 10min sections but there are no indications as to how many questions are on each section. Just want to be prepared before I begin.

There are approximately 6-7 questions in each section. Each section is a little different.

Anybody else choose to not try the calculus validation exam online? I am currently taking calculus this semester and thought it would be a waste to try and validate a course I have not completed

Teeth...hubby is majorly against having wisdom teeth pulled unless there is some kind of problem. None of us, including myself with four impacted wisdom teeth, have ever had ours taken out. I, personally, don't have a problem with it and allowed each of our Navy boys to make his own decision after the local dentist said it wasn't necessary from his point of view. Neither of my boys had to have theirs yanked (and my oldest was told that in spec ops EVERYONE has them pulled). I've heard many say to just go ahead and do it, so I guess it is a very individual decision. If you can't stand the thought of DS/DD having to go through a minor surgery without being there for him/her, then you might want to go ahead with it before hand. Even though my kids have big mouths, it might not be the same for yours! :shake:

Calculus online test...my son had just finished his Calc 1 class and didn't want to take the online calculus test provided by USNA. However, when he clicked that he didn't want to do it, a note came up that said something to this effect: "Our records indicate that you have taken a Calculus class. What is the reason you have decided not to take this test?" Rather than explain that he was just feeling lazy, he decided to take it. :yllol:

And for those of you who have helped your Plebe-to-be work on his/her application...you have NOT ruined his/her chances at becoming an independent adult. Our son lived in three states during his high school years. It was an incredible challenge to get all the paperwork completed, especially Dodmerb and Police record checks, even with all of us working together. DS also had to fly to another state for his MOC and BGO interviews. Plus, he was preparing for a mission trip to Botswana at the end of May. Mom, dad and son all worked together to get everything completed, and I haven't heard that he has had any problems filling out forms or completing paperwork now that he is on his own. I do believe the Plebe-to-be should do as much as possible on his/her own, but don't be disheartened if you helped out during the application process. Your kid will learn!
