Permit to Report!!

At the risk of souding totally clueless... what is bodyglide? Where is it found?

Oh...Ugh! welp, we may have an issue, too. I just purchased ten white tshirts and ten white boxer briefs (jcpenney stafford style). Hmmmmm, I would hate for him to get there and have his undies taken away so maybe I better bring ten extra pair of briefs.....LOL!

My son wears the Under Armor compression shorts under his running shorts and I wonder if those are allowed for plebe summer? Anyone know? And, if so, white or black?

Everything will be taken away when they arrive. Everything.

You can MAIL them some white undergarments that they'll want: those white boxer briefs are good. The white compression shorts are very good. WHITE only.

I felt bad for my plebe--I mailed him a package that was basically underclothes. I knew the upperclass would open it, but it's what he asked for.

By the way, that first phone call home, about 2-3 weeks into plebe summer? Be ready with a notebook. You do not have time to reminisce or hear stories. They say HI MOM!! And Mom says, "What do you need?" Our plebe had a list: send this, that, (can't even remember now!) and MORE UNDERWEAR and LOTS more pictures from home!!!

We mailed a letter every day. Every letter had a note and a picture.

And a box of white underwear once.

I think if they tell you to bring undies, sox, whatever, you'd better bring. Even though many say all of this will be taken away. The first thing they learn is to follow orders, correct? So they'd better show up with the items listed in permit to report packet! If said items are confiscated, I am sure they will use them later. Better be safe than sorry.

The PTR packed said it's ok to bring a tennis racket. Is that really a good idea or should we bring it for PPW?

And just out of sheer curiosity: what do they wear at night to sleep in?

No longer clueless! Has anyone here hever used Bodyglide? Does it really help?

My husband joined the USNA parent website and there is a parent handbook that lists the items to bring on IDAY. It shows the picture of the underwear that is regulation. The boxer briefs are the actual picture shown. Anyone who hasn't joined.....get on the site. Go to USNA.net and join. We haven't read the entire book and information but at least we know that the boxer briefs are okay.....they are in the picture.

Huskiesmama, did you mean they can take the compression shorts with them for IDAY or that we should mail them instead?

BodyGlide does work and is non greasy. There are also other products runners use. Check any running store in your area.

Huskiesmama, ( or anyone may contribute)

Can't get your post out of my mind....did I understand you to say they will take everything from them on IDAY? So does that mean all their underwear and socks on the IDAY list and when will they give them back......confused about this! Why will they take it if they need to wear it.............sorry to sound DAH!!!!!! LOL!

Will they take them? It depends. Depends on Company, whim of the Detailers and anything else. Bring them if you want they will get them back if taken. Re parents net this is the old book with some good some out of date information (they no longer shuffle or shotgun after Plebe Summer). They may have updated but I don't have the url.

OK--I'll clarify as much as I can, and this is based SOLELY on the experience of 2012, last year's plebe summer. I am not saying this is exactly how it may go for 2013, because only a rare few people know what will happen for 2013 this summer, and they're not telling!!

Two things I want to share:

1. Pack what they tell you to pack. Those are your plebe's first orders, so do as told. That is a must.

2. Expect that they will take it away. Yes. You read me right! Why do they tell them to bring stuff they will take away? Who knows. Maybe some years they let them keep it. Maybe it's a test to see if they can follow orders. Maybe it's just to make the moms feel like they are helping their plebe-to-be prepare.

They get their stuff back at the end of summer.

***********************
My main point is NOT TO STRESS about exactly the right briefs or exactly the right socks or whatever. Pack what they tell you to pack.

And then TRUST that USNA will provide exactly what they need for Plebe Summer. They've done this before, and they know what they want the plebes to wear and when. When your plebe makes that first phone call home, they will tell you EXACTLY what they are in need of, and what NOT to send. Be prepared to get that phone call and then run to the store for things like compression shorts or extra socks or granola bars, trail mix, whatever.

My plebe is home now for intercessional leave (for another hour!) and I'm amazed that we dropped him off on I Day with a little bit of stuff (everything on the PTR list!) and the clothes on his back...and he's reached the end of the year with DOZENS of uniform pieces, socks, underwear, PE gear, shoes, cleaning supplies, ....goodness. Can't even describe all his stuff now!

NOT his former stuff. New stuff, new life. Maui1, be prepared to be surprised OFTEN. It's almost always a good shock, but it's really a whole new world you're entering!! Please don't hesitate to ask, post, pm whatever.

Get ready for a ride! Hope that helps a bit....clear as mud?

HuskiesMama,

Thanks for the info. You did a great job at explaining and I am really trying to relax and take each day at a time, I just get a little anxious and worried about doing everything right on top of remembering every minute of every day that our son is leaving us in a very short time. I know it will get better and I do appreciate your info and input. Thanks again.

Maui1, I cried almost every day that last week before I Day. I wasn't just sad, I was overwhelmed. My son made me promise I'd get it all out at home and stay strong on I Day! I did ok at that. Saw him off at Alumni Hall without tears, until he was well inside! Then I cried. Then I got it together and really thoroughly enjoyed the day. Until the oath of office. I cried the whole way through that!! WOW. Powerful. I was good when we visited with him afterwards, and then I think I cried the whole way home! Couldn't believe I'd dropped my child off for God knows what and was leaving him there!!

Makes me cry to remember it. It really is an overwhelming experience.

But it's been amazing, and it's only been ONE year. Now we're preparing for Herndon, and summer leadership positions and surface cruises and more. Amazing. That's the best word for it. You must have raised an amazing child, and now the world is at their doorstep. Hang on tight!

HuskiesMama,
Just reading your post brings tears to my eyes......lol!

I didn't see any instructions for delivering your final transcript to the academy in the ptr. Does anybody know when/how this is done?

Permit to Report

I am sitting in my office at work reading the new posts and just saw HuskiesMama's post. I have tears in my eyes (okay running down my cheeks) - I had to explain to my assistant why I was crying when she walked in to hand me something.

We have to stay positive for our plebes. If they have the courage and determination to do this, the least we can do is be supportive and not too embarrassing.

See everyone on July 1. I will bring the tissues.

Well, I'm glad you cried!

If you did, I must have given you a teeny taste of what's to come. It's like the middle of the road disappears. Everything is extreme. My plebe was either extremely ECSTATIC or extremely upset. Extremely frustrated. Extremely worried. Extremely proud! Extremely exhausted.

I cannot emphasize enough what a roller coaster it is. And I've only been on it for a year. I am watching the parents of firsties as they prepare for commissioning, and training and deployment, and I can see that even MY extremes are just the warm-up. The highs get higher and the lows get lower. The worries get more severe and the rewards more amazing.

Strap yourself in for a wild ride, and learn to enjoy a glass of wine! Ha!

3 days to Herndon!
