I wasn't sure about this. After BCT, could my parents send me a blanket? I doubt that one would be allowed during. Plus, I know that people sleep on top of their beds, and I'd like to have a blanket if I had to do that.

Yes.

I sent my DD her fleece blanket and pillow. She ordered herself an electric blanket and her friend gave her a pillow pet which she uses as a 2nd pillow. Hopefully you will get an A-Day and PW. If so, your parents could bring things up for A-Day. If not, or if you parents can't come, then in your first box you'll probably want blanket, pillow, favorite wubby, replacement socks & underwear, replacement shoes and/or boots, food and snacks, school and/or small cleaning supplies (depends on what they want), and favorite toiletry items not carried in the general store. You will get quite a bit on your own from the store, or if you are allowed off base and get a ride, borrow a car, etc...You will also order a bunch of things online, so I highly suggest linking through Amazon Smile to your parents club or favorite organization, and setting up your address book now - especially your USAFA box #, home address etc.

Tell your parents to stock up on spacesaver bags, I have used several, especially for Recognition and the civilian clothes later.

You’ll figure out all the tricks. Lightweight sleeping bags, etc. Surely you’ll get a nice itchy issue wool blanket, but that’s the Navy, so Air Force probably has cozy ultra-soft micro fleece. No doubt a current or recent cadet will post.

My DS has been sleeping with the poncho liner that kept me warm in Ranger School. I’ll mail it to him as soon as he can receive it but I’m keeping the OD green wool blanket!

When can cadets have a personal computer/device? What about sports equipment (i.e. Tennis Racket)?
Devices will be squadron dependent - sports equipment (yay tennis!!!!) right after basic, so A-day if you can get it. I left all my tennis stuff with my coach, but others left theirs with local families (B and B program, SAF contacts, friends of friends) to bring on A day if their parents weren't coming for A day (mine didn't)

What about bikes? DS is a mountain biker and is considering riding with the USAFA cycling club or interested in just getting out and riding some of the trails. Where would one store their bike, if allowed?

There's bike racks in vandy quad. I don't know about sijan.

As far as blankets and such, I always did fine with the issued "blue magnet" comforter. If they want something else, sure, but it's not essential.

@USAFA10s I’m a competitive tennis player in my state (not good anough to play D1 at USAFA) but I was hoping to play club. Do you know if there is a club team at USAFA that does the college USTA league or any sort of inter college competition?

@KiwiBird to address the 2nd part - my DD sleeps on top of her bed. You will find answers that go all ways - some say heck with it and sleep under the sheets, many on top; different mattress topper recommendations. This goes for just about everything like style of hot water pots and larger items like guitars and skis etc. You will find MANY rules are squadron dependent, so for now, it's good to address some things, but hold your decisions until after BCT for what you need, when, and how, if at all.

Just a heads up, as a 4 degree generally blankets/alternate bedding isn't allowed. That doesn't mean you can't have it though, if you know what I mean. After basic you'll get issued the famous USAFA trunk. The saying goes that "whatever is in the trunk, doesn't exist." Best of luck.

My roommate kept a 10 gallon aquarium for his iguana next to the trunk - does that count? The blanket that sat on top of the trunk successfully covered/hid that cage during a MWH inspection. That was a stressful morning...

Not that I know of - but club tennis teams weren't that common anywhere when I was there. I'd say if there truly isn't one, you should try to start one! There are plenty of cadets that play that either weren't good enough for DI or quit the team because of the insane time commitment or other reasons, and the USTA lays out how to do it on their website

Thanks for the info! I wasn’t aware that cadets could start new clubs.

You should all just bring what you want on Iday. Pay no attention to just the required items in a single backpack to carry all day. Bring your tennis racquets, bikes make it easier to get from the footsteps up the ramp and large blankets and sleeping bags make for easy things to lay out on the TZO and talk while others are getting haircuts and trying on boots. Lol

Yes - happens all the time, it just takes quite a bit of work to set it up as an LOS (limited on season) status club and you'll have to find someone on the faculty willing to be your OIC (officer in charge).

Box boy episode 2?

I do recall a flying squirrel being discovered once. Turns out it decided to run on its wheel (which squeaked) during a SAMI.
