Hello all,

I received an appointment to USMA Class of 2026 a few weeks ago and I had a few questions regarding personal technology at West Point.

1. Does anybody know specifically what model of Dell laptops are issued to cadets? Are these laptops new or used by previous classes of cadets?
2. Is it common for a cadet to have a personal laptop besides the issued one (ex. a Mac for personal use)?
3. Is there a limit on how many devices a cadet can have connected to the wifi/have in general?
4. I heard some mixed comments regarding the wifi connectivity at USMA and other SA's. Is there any confirmation on this?

Thank you all for your time. I look forward to your responses!

Does any school have good wifi??? 🤔🤔

1. Dell Latitude 5400. Fluctuates slightly year-to-year.
2. No, except perhaps for gaming. No need. Recommend getting an iPad.
3. No. You will connect them to a different Wi-Fi network.
4. It went through a massive overhaul my Plebe year. It is very fast and fairly consistent now.

3. No. You will connect them to a different Wi-Fi network.
Is that so? I've always been told that there is no way to connect any personal device besides your phone to the Wi-Fi. Good to know that this doesn't seem to be the case anymore if I'm understanding correctly.

I wouldn't give you incorrect information. There is a guest network that we use for personal devices like Xboxes etc.

Thank you. Really appreciate this help.

As a parents, do you have any advise and DOs and DONTs. We also have too much to process. I am sure your parents went through this.

Any inputs which will help our incoming class as well help us ( From parents standpoint)

Support your cadet. Encourage them to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. Also, realize that West Point is a lot to take in. So you may not get a lot of letters written back during CBT, but send a lot, we love receiving mail. Additionally, during the academic school year, there may be less communication since our schedules are full. Personally, I talk to my parents every day or other day. Some talk to their parents about once a week, and some never. It is really up to your cadet, and what works well with them.

Reach out to your state or local West Point Parents club.
