Petreaus resigns

Except that he shouldn't have anything classified in there.... only SIPR.

Presuming that his NIPR/official email was compromised....even though the information is unclassified, it doesn't mean it can automatically be shared with the public or those without a "need to know." Additionally, there are other security concerns that are beyond someone just reading emails they aren't suppose to have access to.

Why hasn't this been talked about at all? The first I heard of this was yesterday. on the third segment of the national news. This should have been a bigger story!

A bigger story....how?

I told my DH yesterday that I hoped it wasn't that amazing female WP grad who wrote his biography that he was involved with. So much for that......

Shame on both of them.

This is a personal tragedy for Gen. Petraeus and his family as well as a loss to the nation of a brilliant and dedicated public servant. Millions of key-strokes will now be expended in speculation. However, if the often impeachable Newsmax is correct and he indeed sent thousands of e-mails, then he was in the grip of an obsession and needed some kind of intervention.

On the plus side, there's an opening for a new biographer.

Tragedy for his family but for him, not so much. He chose poorly and will now experience the consequences which is how it should be. That is not tragic. That his family will now have to live with the consequences of his actions, over which they had no control...now that is tragic.

Interesting timing on this.... and the Iranian shoot down.

Huh?? Where are you getting your news? It was an Iranian shoot AT. They missed.

Update in developments - have fun speculating:

Investigation began when a woman contacted the FBI because some anonymous person was sending harassing/threatening emails. That person turned out to be Paula Broadwell. The woman who filed the complaint is not identified.
The emails are purported to be concerning the woman's relationship with Petraeus.
During this investigation the FBI discovered emails between Broadwell and Petraeus and the affair.

Also: Even though Petraeus himself, won't be testifying the Acting Director will be testifying before Congress - this is really a non-issue.

Step away from the Kool-ade JAM..... the shootdown attempt happened BEFORE the election, but was planned to be released after. You may like that, but a majority of American's dont. I can tell you, if my ship was shot at, we wouldn't have said "eh, they missed, nothing to talk about here..."

And, because I know you don't know this, this kind of thing doesn't happen around the world, everyday.

And why do you think the Petraeus information came out after the election? Well, it never looks good to have your CIA director step down, but the kinds of questions it would raises, rightly or wrongly, after Benghazi... well that could change some votes.

Hi JAM! I know that's the story (about the emails and how this all came out) but I, for one, am not buying it. Since when does the FBI get involved in an investigation where someone is receiving anonymous threats from someone else? I think this was initially triggered by a suspected security leak and this email thing is just the cover story. Or there was "something else" that triggered it but not that some other woman was being threatened. Just my $0.02. Guess we'll all find out over the coming weeks... and months... and years.... this is going to drag on and on.

Packer,

Thank you for making me smile!

I truly needed it today...not being sarcastic in anyway, shape or form.

It's the power of the FBI to monitor emails that has my head spinning! And you are right...this will be much bigger. Sadly.

Apparently, it's not a great idea to be in the intelligence business and have an affair. The temptress may be the bad guy/girl.

I'm beginning to think that they put 'infidelity' stuff in the water at West Point that the future Generals drink.

I don't it's the source of commission, rather the rank that confers "infidelity" to some general officers.

Perhaps, upon earning the rank of General they are given the "invincibility potion".

Buff81: General Allen is a Marine and not a product of West Point. A Naval Academy graduate. The story gets weirder and weirder.

Joint operations that everyone is happy about. It's a miracle.

Nice to see generals go "purple".

LITS: Do you mean they "Assume The Purple" when they get that first star? Hope it isn't so.

Honestly I think this is a sign that the military needs to really reshift its focus when we finally get out of A-stan.

There has been (in my eyes) a massive corruption of the basic moral values and discipline of the military in the past decade of war, and it has had an effect on the entire rank structure of the military. It seems like we no longer take pride in the rigor and discipline of the military structure. I've been seeing this crap in junior troops (cheating on their spouses, etc) for years and years even up to the field grade officers, but this whole scandal shows how corrupt and unworkable our military system has become recently.

In no other time were soldiers required to go on 3, 4 sometimes upwards of 7+ deployments during their careers, effectively shutting down their relationships with the real world and their spouses. Then when they get home, they face more rigorous training before their next deployment, during which they get little time to spend with their families. Meanwhile, due to harsh rules and inadequate rest/relaxation time, you have joes getting drunk, DUIs and going to jail because they're so wound up.

I honestly can't wait till the whole GWOT saga is over and we can rebuild the military into a respectable and workable organization. I know this is a rant, but it's frustrating to preach Army values and all that and see the nation's highest leaders flagrantly violate those same values.

Watching TV

I'm watching the soap operas today to get away from it all... oops! No, sorry.. that was Fox News.
