So, I am a college re-applicant for USNA and still CPR. I have had a pretty successful college semester. I will have completed 34 credits after this semester (12 Dual Enrolled, and 22 this school year). I have a perfect 4.0 GPA, on the Presidents List, and taking college honor's classes. I just got a letter from the college asking me to join Phi Theta Kappa, but it costs $87 to join. How will USNA and the MOC's view it? I guess my question is, is it worth the $87 to join? I guess it's one more thing to put on my resume, but I was wanting someone else's take on it before I pay for membership.

Regardless if it adds points or not to a WCS, I think it all depends on how you leverage the opportunity. What is you don't get into USNA? Would you kick yourself for not joining? If it offers a chance to network (you have no idea how much this means as you progress in life), scholarship opportunities, a chance to be a leader in the organization (they probably have different roles that would help your application), volunteer opportunities (or a pool of people to help with a volunteer project you lead). Many applicants can write a long list of clubs, ECAs, sports, volunteerism. I could care less how long the list is. I want to know what they did in that group to better themselves, their community, the world. How did they lead? How well did they follow (have to be a good follower before you can lead)? Look at it from this perspective instead of if I pay $87 will it add a point to my WCS? Maybe, maybe not. But all the other stuff will.

This.....a thousand times...what Hoops said!

From an admissions perspective, joining or not joining is probably not going to make any difference at this point. MOCs have absolutely no input or matter at this point...you either received a nomination or not.

^ Agreed. It is too late in this admission cycle for that to make any difference for USNA and you either have a NOM or your don't by now. Paying a fee to join something doesn't show leadership. What matters to the SA's is what you actually accomplish in those roles. It would most likely take time to become a leader in that group and we are already in mid-March, so too late for this year.

The question was mainly if I dont get in this year. I will go to the informational meeting and learn more about it, but right now I am wondering why pay the $ when I can be a leader and follower for free in other organizations. I am a Volunteer Assistant Wrestling coach (was team captain) for the high school I graduated from and put forth about 12.5 hours a week during season. I am also a Assistant Scoutmaster for the troop I earned Eagle with and volunteer about 2 hours a week. Both are pretty much free.

As with most organizations, it's not about being a member, it's what you do once you are a member.
