Does anyone know what the time frame is for our plebes to call home this Sunday? I remember with my other two it was like 4pm - 6pm, but I was told this by a letter. I haven't received any letter this time for stating what the time frame is. Thank you in advance for your help.

Update

I received a letter from my plebe yesterday. It seems that I company will be calling home at 2 pm eastern time. If times are different for other companies it may be nice to go ahead and post them for the parents who have not received that letter with the time of their phone call.

My data is extremely dated (try 22 years!), so I'll ask a question rather than offer an answer...

In my day, Plebes were free from approximately 0800 - 1200 on Sundays. The idea was that the free time would be used to attend divine services, although whether the kids did or not was up to them. If they didn't, they were left alone in the Hall, during which time they would catch up on rates, shine shoes, and/or call home. The lines at the phone rooms (yes, we had those) were LONG.

Embarassingly enough, one of the official photos of my class includes me waiting in such a line.

How do they do it now?

There are phone jacks in the rooms - but no phones. Have to bring your own landline phone, and then no long distance service so need calling cards. Phone in room would not be allowed during Plebe summer and would be confiscated if parent were to send.

Sunday mornings are still as described, with the exception of calling home. That is now done as an organized evolution, typically on a Saturday or Sunday, and for my sons class was at 1600 eastern daylight time, especially on Sunday so not to interfere with church time on the west coast.

The Plebes are all outside as that is where the best cell service is. They are given their cell phones back the night before or first thing in the morning to charge them. There are phones made available for those kids who do not have cell phones. They all dial, and make their calls with the detailers yelling in the background 4 minutes to go... 3 minutes to go... 2 minutes to go... 2 minute, 30 seconds 15 seconds. Most annoying but now very funny!

For the Class of 2010 it was 5 minutes unless your platoon had earned extra phone time. Even with five minutes, they are allowed to make more than one call if there are split families or significant others.

I must be getting old. I see absolutely no value in that system. We could talk as long as we wanted once we got a phone.

Oh, well. I'm not the Sup, so there it is.

Once Plebe summer ends - and they get a room phone if they want one and get their cells back the are free to use their phones at any* time and for as long as they want.

*for Plebe year they are not supposed to make or receive phone calls during study time after 7:30 pm. Varies by company.

The phone banks were taken out in 05-06. Just about everyone has a cell now in the hall. Some kids go out and hook up their land line but it is only useful as a tool to make prank calls to/from. It can be difficult for 4/c to find phone time during the ac year. Some parts of the hall are terrible for reception while others are great. All of the nice places (stairwells/breezeways) that upperclass use are not available to plebes. We had a million candle power spotlight that we would shine on people on red beach whenever they used the phone or engaged in the spring time ritual known as mid dating. They would get pretty furious.
