Phone calls from DD at SLS

True, but it was a very similar program. Less of the PT parts of it, but from what my son describes it was very similar to when I went to it (then called Invitational Academic Workshop) back in 1983. And when my husband did it as cadre as a firstie in 1985. Even though they changed the name (trying to take the focus off the academic side of it), I think they can justify it's more or less the same program.

Haha, the whole thing seems more academic nowadays! I think we made a hologram of something and then I did a bunch of Army stuff (JANUS, if anyone has had the misfortune). I liked being cadre for it. Easy gig.

I agree that it's still mostly Academic now - my son went to NASS, AF SS and SLS and thought WP's was by far the most "sit & listen" or classroom type. However, I'm fairly sure that when I went we were not allowed to do any PT (we still had formations and marched places early in the morning but no actual running or pushups or anything).

When you were cadre, did you get to leave right after finals and miss graduation? That was the big "perk" for my husband. Ironic story - my IAW squad leader was actually my husband's plebe squad leader just a few weeks earlier. So she knew both of us, but of course we didn't know each other yet - actually not for nearly 2 more years when we met at the Boy Scout Camporee at Lake Frederick in April of my plebe year (1985). We all ended up at Bragg together several years later! I know, in the military it's always a small world!

Yes and no. I left early to do Airborne and then returned for IAW. We did a few "formation runs" from Cullum to Mac Statue (what's that, 3/4 mile maybe?).

Where IS Waldo?

Thanks Ken2012 for posting the link to the pics! I think I MAY see my son in a couple, but I've already resolved myself to living vicariously through the posts from parents who have heard from their kids and know what's going on!
Actually, I coaxed DS into breaking his silence today through a text message; said they were just leaving military training at Buckner...
I'm sure it's been an incredible week for all!

This might be a little off topic, but maybe a parent who has talked to their child at session 1 knows...
I am taking the red eye to Newark for the 2nd session of SLS and so will be arriving pretty early. The SLS letter said officers would be waiting in the terminal to pick us up, but I've also heard baggage claim. Does anyone know which is true? Thanks so much, I just want to be sure!
