I know there was a similar post about USMA..but I must ask.

How does calling parents/ family members work after Plebe Summer?
When I visited the Academy for CVW, I had a really hard time getting reception.
I have Teen Mobile.
For those who are familiar with phones at USNA, does your son/daughter have AT&T or Verizon or some other service? Do they have a pay phone?

Thanks!

Or maybe a prepaid go phone?? Would that work as well?

Any advice or suggestions is appreciated. Thank You!

Bancroft Hall is like a bunker -- very, very thick concrete walls. Reception is better in some wings of the building than in others. Verizon works most of the time, but we occasionally experience dropped calls. Texting works much better for us.
Plebes cannot talk on the phone while walking (this may be true for all Mids, but definitely for plebes), so if you go outside to make a call, you have to stand still.
There used to be an option in which Mids could have a land line phone in their room. With the proliferation of cell phones, not sure whether this will be offered in the future. It is a small expense. You would set it up after you move from your Plebe Summer room to your Ac Year room.
There was a thread on this subject a few weeks ago if you want to read more about it.

The whole of annapolis is like a giant bowl. You will experience problems hitting a cell tower but its not hard to find a spot to call out. If you are on the odd side of Bancroft facing north severn it is much better than if you are facing downtown

Due to the poor reception inside Bancroft, our plebe generally contacts us via Oovoo if he's in his room. We use both the video and text chat options. If he calls on his cell phone (AT&T), he is usually outside, but texting seems to be fine wherever he is.

What about WIFI. If DS has an I-Phone, will "FaceTime" work inside Bancroft? I heard that computers were hard-wired and there was no WIFI in Bancroft.
