"A lone Tomb Sentinel, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), walks his tour in humble reverence during Hurricane Irene in Arlington National Cemetery, Va., Aug 27. Members of The Old Guard have guarded the Tomb every second, of every day regardless of weather or holidays since April 6, 1948." ('Army Day' during the Harry Truman Administration)

Might have even liked the breeze, considering the humidity in DC this summer.

Actually since 1937.

The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In fact, there has been a Sentinel on duty in front of the Tomb every minute of every day since 1937.

I thought the photos moving ... yet I was totally offended by the pop up add for a political book that covered them ... bad form, insulting to the Tomb and those it represents.

It was probably from cookies on your computer and not at all sponsored by the site. One can hope, that is.

The photos were good, I agree. Thank you not only to the guards, but also all those who serve, in fair weather and in foul.

I got the same annoying popups.....when I closed out and restarted the site I was able to view the pictures and read the article.

The Old Guard, and in general, the honor guards of each service do a great job, but this photo has been overhyped in the media. He's likely been in worse weather, and will return to his private quarters 30 feet away from the Tomb in no time.

They do a great job, don't get me wrong, but there are MANY people in operational roles who don't get the hype of this photo and are in far worse weather.
