Does this have to be a high school gym teacher employed by the school? Most students do not have any relationships with the gym teachers, and I could have great evaluations done by my crossfit trainers or by a school sport’s team trainer who is not employed by the school district but trains our school sports.

I think you are ok to ask the school athletic trainer. If my memory serves my right that what my son did.

Figuring out who could do the PE SOE (without a PE teacher) was the hardest point of my son's USMA app. Our FFR was not able to help and it took some time but he eventually got some direction from Regional Commander at an service academy event. Surprisingly to me, they told him to have a school PE teacher write it (who doesn't know my son except in passing) with her getting input from his coach (who is not allowed to write it).

My son had his Performance Coach (Athletic Trainer), who works with all athletes at the school very closely, write the PE SOE. He knows him very well, as he is a dual sport Varsity athlete and trains almost every day. He doesn't have a PE class, due to him being in the JROTC program that has a PT component to it. I think it says that's ok on the SOE section of the application.

So I can ask my athletic trainer? It won’t ask him like what School do you work for?

I’d reach out to your regional commander and ask if it is okay for your trainer to do the SOE. If I remember correctly the directions state that the SOE has to be from a PE teacher UNLESS it is from a coach who has also taught you in a PE class (this was my case).

I would verify with your RC...my son had it ok'd due to him not having a PE class. Look under SOE requirements on your application site.

Will do. I just figured I didn’t want to create an awkward situation for my trainer when/if the eval asks him to state which school he works for.

You have to do what the instructions say. If you can't because of your school's unique circumstances, then you need to ask your RC for permission to do something different, not a bunch of people on the internet. As well meaning as everyone here is, we can't give you permission to do something different than the instructions clearly state you have to do.

Even if someone else was given permission to do something different in the past, that doesn't mean that YOU have permission to do something different. You have to get permission yourself.

I am thrown a bit by the point you make, 'great evaluations from my cross fit trainers'. The CFA is not a subjective evaluation. Their job is to proctor it and record the numbers of correctly executed exercises. It isn't something that the proctor should give good or bad remarks, just report the facts. You might have some luck with the local recruiters as well. For the West Point CFA our son reached out to an officer at ROTC and he was happy to proctor and video. Good luck to you!

Not the CFA. The SOE.

Oh shoot, so sorry. My mistake. I have had CFA and that darn basketball throw on my mind since July so I am a suffering from tunnel vision. I retrieved 1 too many basketballs many an evening. Good luck to you.

True. I have a school employed PE teacher that could do an SOE for me. I was just inquiring about this because I have a better relationship with the team trainer, rather than the gym teacher who teaches thousands of high school kids in regular gym class.

We were told by Admissions the only way to have a coach or trainer do our DS Phys Ed SOE was if they were also a Phys Ed Teacher.

OP was referring to the PE SOE, not the CFA.

Yes, they pointed that out to me, see my previous comment about the tunnel vision the CFA and basket ball throw retrievals caused me.
