Pilot Shortage

fencer,

I have a sneaky feeling that as soon as we understand UPT and our head stops spinning. It will start spinning again when they go to their FTU! :shake:

I have just come to acceptance that my cranium will be spinning for at least 2 yrs!

Individuals like hornet, by the time UPT is over with, will be a Captain (O-3). My son will be in the same situation. I wonder how many are in that position. Not just grad school graduates, but if there's possibly any others. Maybe ROTC who don't start UPT right after graduation. Maybe any late slots.

It's just wierd to see the time fly by so fast. Seems like the other day, we were talking BCT, Christmas break. Ring Dance. Being a C1C. Getting their assignments. Now we're talking about UPT and some of the people we're talking about, like Hornet, graduated more than 3 years ago.

GOD, I'm Getting Old!!!

LOL!!!! Later.... Mike....

Let me fix that for ya. ;)

Yea, some day, I'm going to wake up and be dead. Time goes by way too fast. You all need to enjoy it and appreciate it while you have it.

Hornet is NOT 3 years out. No Way Possible. He's gonna graduate next May, right? Right after my kids get out of their 4* year?

CC: OLD. Join the party, pal.

I know it sucks. I swear that you, me, your twins, my son, etc... were just in BCT yesterday. We had a great thudgate and parent's weekend. We looked forward to the holidays and seeing them again.

But nope. Next May Hornet becomes a captain, and our boys are no longer butter bars. They become 1st LT's.

You all are depressing me. LOL

Just an update from our DS regarding how even with a pilot shortage, because of furloughs, students are seeing the impact now. Remember they moved around the budget from OPS so they could keep UPT going at the same rate.

For the 1st time at LAFB, this class is separated into 2 groups during the formation/instrument phase. It has nothing to do with their ranking. It has everything to do with the furlough. Air traffic controllers were also furloughed and it is impacting how many they can place through instrument rating at one time. Thus, they are splitting them in 1/2, some are doing formation, some are doing instrument, and than they will do the other for the next phase.

Hagel is on record only in the past 2 weeks saying furloughs may also occur in FY14 due to the fact that they got their budget cut again.

JMPO, until they get the budget under control we are going to keep seeing pilot shortages, many occurring out of frustration with the DoD. This occurred back in the early 90's after the RIFs and BRACs, plus the 1.XY% pay raises. They not only upped it to 125K back then, but also starting FY98, they gave certain yr groups double digit pay raises for several yrs. Pilots still left in droves until 9/11 regardless of how much money was being thrown at them. Airlines were hiring and they were tired.

This is the last drop from ENJJPT:

ENJJPT 13-07

F-16 x 5
F-15E x 2
A-10 x 2
F-22
T-38 Aggressor (follow on F-22)
T-6 (Faip)
T-38 (Faip)
B-1 x 2
B-52

And what a beautiful drop it was! That doesn't include the 5 guard fighters (4x F16, 1xF15C) or the 4 Italians (C-130, Tornado, 2x Eurofighter). Interesting note on the shortage: their were people in this drop who received fighters who did not have them as their top choice

Stealth, I didn't place the ENJJPT drop because they don't drop heavies, and most cadets don't go there for UPT compared to the other UPT classes.

All students at ENJJPT track T-38s, not T-1s or helos. However, the T-38 is universally assignable. Their have been plenty of ENJJPT grads over the last year alone who have dropped C-17s, C-130s, and even a KC-135 here and there. It all comes down to timing and what the AF has available for a drop
