The other day, DD took out a sealed envelope from under her mattress and asked whether I know what was in it. I did not. She told me that it was $300 that she had put into an envelope (at the start of the USNA application process) to buy the family a crab dinner before the I-day. I'm looking for a reasonably priced place where we can get some yummy Maryland blue crabs. Any recommendations?

We took our son to Cantlers the day before IDay and again right after the Herndon climb. Reasonable and relaxed.

Great story--Congratulations to your DD and best of luck this summer. I know that will be one of the best meals you'll ever share.

I lived in Annapolis for 15 years and just moved to NOLA last summer. Go to The Point Crab House in Arnold. It is close on the water and the food and crabs are wonderful. Dave Groll hangs out there during the summer months.
There is also Mikes in Riva. Close as well.
Know your crab lingo for the area. Jimmies are the top dog and pricey. Most of the time they are not worth the extra price cause they are not much larger than the Larges. Ask the server to tell you they are truly Jimmies. Last year a doz of Jimmies was running about $80-$110. Large were in the $50-$70 range.
Fishermans across the bay bridge is great too. Traffic is a bear in the summer but if you go early you should not have a problem.

I will offer my services to take you to some back creek places in Deal, Maryland with great views and off the beat and path. ;):p:D I have a DD P2B as well.

Oh my - this can get some Team Crab Place X is better than Team Crab Place Y conversations going!

You can't stay in business around Annapolis, Baltimore and the Eastern Shore if you don't serve respectable crab. That means crab cakes with minimal binder and bursting with jumbo lumps of crab, and buckets of soft shells with mallets and bibs, and ooey-gooey crab dip to nosh on while you wait.
Crabs are usually Market Price.

- Cantler's is a classic waterfront crab deck. No reservations. Long-time local favorite.

- The Point, another favorite.

- Mike's on the South River, plenty of seating outside in the over-water deck and inside, easy parking. It's actually in Riva, a handful of miles right down Riva Rd. from the hotel cluster on Riva Rd. Good for groups.

Any place that serves crab by the bucket is usually a shorts and sandals kind of place. The menus will usually offer burgers, steak and chicken for non-crabby types.

And for the long haul, don't forget:

And don't forget to have the Nutty Buddy for dessert!

Wow, the recommendations are coming in too fast. I'm done yelping one when another recommendation comes in...

We actually ate at Cantlers while visiting USNA last year. We sort of stumbled upon it and I didn't realize that it was such an esteemed place. I hadn't remembered the name of the place and didn't recognize it until I saw the photos of the front door on Yelp.

Yes, Cantler’s! We are so looking forward to Cantler’s this summer! Anyone know if a water taxi will take you up there? Thanks!

You accidentally stumbled upon Cantlers ? You must've been way lost ! I have trouble finding it when I try --but alas, only get their every 10 years or so. That's the place ! (Hint , go before I Day, don't save it for Parent's weekend--crabs and new whites don't go well together !)

Im still going to say the point crab house is the best @nolamomma has the right idea!
100% agree with you. Their fish tacos are amazing as well and the best orange crush in town. Grapefruit is pretty nice as well.
And did I mention Dave Groll hangs out there?

When I say that we stumbled upon it, I meant that we saw an ad for it in the hotel map and tried it without people's recommendation. I do remember driving down some out-of-way street wondering whether the GPS was malfunctioning.

Ok, I'll bite, I know who Dave Grohl is and will reveal my musical antiquity. Not sure who Dave Groll is? I feel like I have failed my Annapolis transplant exam.

I did meet Walter Cronkite in McGarvey's once...and David Robinson several times at USNA.

I have not run into Pat Sajak and his wife, though I have been in the Sajak Pavilion at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Back to Crab Gouge*:

Oh - McGarvey's in City Dock area - raw bar!

Deep Creek Cafe on the Magothy River in Arnold is also a local crab fave.

*Gouge - Navy term for inside scoop.

To get everyone in the mood, I chose this one from the numerous Crab Cracking 101s available on YouTube:

My only quibble is he's flying bib-free, a high-risk maneuver.

And yes, I have those collectors' dream items, Go Navy Beat Army crab mallets, souvenir of a memorable tailgater.

I would see Pat Sajak often at the Safeway in Severna Park.
